BMW Performance Steering Wheel on E60?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if it's possible to install the E90/E92/E93 BMW performance steering wheel (version 1 or 2) on the E60?

These are the wheels with the info screen & shift lights on them. I know it would require a new airbag and maybe some fabrication more than likely. But does anyone know if it's possible or ever even attempted on an E60 especially an M5? I really want to do it and I see them used online all the time...

I know they fit on the new 1 Series as well for a fact...

How does this have to do with the HUD in anyway ?

Because M5 owners who have HUD will argue this wheel is un-necessary since they have shift lights on their HUD. But for us owners who do not have HUD, we do not have the luxury of rev ( shift ) lights!

I've been wondering this for a while now. I was hoping it would work with any SMG car. It would be sick!

Is it a coding issue or mechanical issue that it won't fit on our E60 M5's!

" Anything is possible with enough money as they say in the customization industry & the imagination is the only limit " I do have HUD but it would be another cool MOD to have.

I don't think anyone has purchased one to figure out why it wont work.

I'm sure sizing / connection points / airbag are all things to worry about before getting the shift lights / track time features to work.

Hello all. I actually have the steering wheel installed. Everything is working except for running actual power to the wheel. All my buttons are fine and in normal working order. When hooking the display of the steering wheel to a battery it does work. It’s just finding power to work with the steering that’s the issue. Once I figure where to connect the wire I can give an update and let you all know how to make it work.

Hello All,

I also have the wheel and I'm unfortunately at the same point as Joe08M5, it's installed, all buttons on steering wheel work as intended but need to find the +12v and ground on the steering column to give power to the LED.

To be clear, this is not the original BMW M Wheel...it's an aftermarket one where an OBDII plug with internal bluetooth sends the car's parameters to the LED for display.

I'm new to the forum and don't know how to attach a pic or else I would show you guys how flipping cool it looks.

Joe08M5, did you find the +12v and ground wires on the steering column?

Thanks,

Miguel

I know a local shop that works on our cars and made an appointment to have it installed...they want to charge $375 for 2 hrs of work. I'm a DIYer but the reason why I made an appointment with the shop is because I don't know the source for +12v or ground and shops have schematics and they'll know where to tap into. Yes, I've looked online high and low for the schematics but have not found them or else I would have installed it myself already...the shop is really busy so my appointment is 2 weeks out...if I get a hold of the schematics and understand them ? I will do the install and update you guys.

I know what you mean by tapping onto cigarette lighter or fuse box or something similar...not trying to go that route as the install should be in my opinion really neat and clean...if I do that then that requires routing wires through panels and what not and being susceptible to maybe wire shorting out somewhere (of course worse case scenario) and to try to find out where could be a nightmare...trying to keep it nice, neat, clean with wires coming out of the steering column where in my opinion the steering wheel should be connected to.

I do appreciate the advice so please don't take what I'm saying the wrong way, it's just my personal choice.

Has every single wiring schematic listed for a E60 M5. Will have steering column wiring in there as it is what I used for my 6MT swap.

Thanks for the link...I appreciate it. I must say though that it is very informative and technical, too technical (smiley face), for my understanding...I saw some schematics but couldn't really understand them. Let me rephrase what I mentioned on an earlier post...if I were to know exactly which wires on the steering column connection to tap into for +12v and negative then I could install myself (smiley face). I do want to say that I appreciate all of you that want to see my project through and provide me me info. I'll keep at it

Cold m3 thanks for the advice of hosting the pics somewhere else and sharing the link.

So here it is, this is what mine looks like.

Although I'm well aware that it's personalized to my liking and therefore not everyone will like it as much as I do, I still love it! And believe me, I'm enjoying every bit of it.

Can't wait to get the LED hooked up and working.

Actually think it looks good  the only thing I'd change would be getting the paddles black.

Thanks!

The paddles and the wheel were acquired separately. The paddles are actually full carbon fiber, not that that matters to me because to be honest and not to offend anyone, I'm not a fan of the carbon look so I had them painted red to match the Red M Button and Red Start Button.

It appears to be the same concept. I mean it shows the LED on top.

You need to make sure you are getting it from a trusted store/source.

I did a lots and lots of searching. You'll be shocked how many people reel you in with a cheap price only to find out later that the price is for you to ship them your original stock wheel to China for them to customize it and add the LED to it. And you have to take it apart (paddle shifters and trim) and they are not responsible for anything that may be broken and or damaged.

Update:

My appointment is today...had not driven the car in 3 weeks...looks filthy so decided to take it to the car wash before the appointment. Strange enough; they pull the car out of the wash tunnel and i notice it's got a flat. I drove my car for almost 10 miles and did not feel a flat nor did my stock tpms nor my aftermarket tpms went off making me believe the flat happened in the tunnel. I pointed out to the worker and no one knows anything. They are telling me it came that way. I told them I dove for 10 miles and would have felt a flat or my tpms would have notified me. We attempt to take the wheel off so I can go to a tire shop...1 lug bolt strips! Now I'm stuck...car wash people still saying car arrived with flat. I wait for owner to see cameras...long argument back and forth, camera's show my car was fine when it went in...now waiting on 2nd tow truck as the 1st flatbed was too high or car too low to get on...so didn't make it to the shop to get my steering wheel installed.
