SMG Pump Rebuild

I just picked up a 2006 BMW M5 and ive been going back and forth as to whether or not I should fork up the money for an aftermarket warranty. After doing some research online, I found a shop who rebuilds SMG pumps for the M5. I gave him a call and he said the price "may" be cheaper once he gets the pump, but 2250 - 300 (core) charge is the maximum it would cost (if he had to replace all the parts). He seems very knowledgeable and told me exactly what goes into the rebuild and said his turn around time is only 24 hours. This might be a good alternative to those like me who are out of warranty and end up with SMG pump failure. What are your guys thoughts? Pay $1950 to have your pump rebuilt or pay $2900 for a new pump?

Thumbs down

This is very interesting and very cool. I would consider this once my car goes out of warranty. I'm keeping this info, thanks!

omg i am sooooo glad i just got on here today. Last week my SMG pump went out and the dealer is saying they want to charge 10k for a new clutch/flywheel and a new pump w/updated software. i had my car towed back to my house and its just been sitting in my garage. Before i read this I was thinking about swaping out the SMG and just getting a 6spd manual with a aftermarket clutch (to handle the HP) because i heard it would cost around 5 or6k. but if you find any more info about the rebuild plz let me know! asap

Im sorry to hear about your troubles. I suggest you find a indy shop to pull your pump and send it off to get rebuilt. Ive gotten quotes around the $500 range for the labor. Total cost for the replacement should be $2500 - $3000.

BTW, how did you know your pump went out? Did it completely die on you? or does it have issues switching gears?

$10k is stupid expensive - that's probably ~20-25% of the value of your car. It is so aggrivating that BMW charges an arm and a leg for these parts, and the dealer exacerbates the problem with techs that diagnose by replacement (rather than diagnose to replace). It is even more frustrating that your SMG failure is probably fixed by a $10 part.

Good luck.

Thanks for this info. I'll file this information away for hopefully NEVER to be used. Good to know though, as I have a pretty good Indy guy nearby that could tackle this with no issue.

My opinion, I would buy a brand new pump that way you have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. For the money and the long term hassle it makes more since. Either way you'll spend the extra money if you have any issues with the rebuilt pump and having to take it off again in labor costs, returns and downtime. Check to see what's the warranty on the rebuilt pump.
Just a thought.
