@ Dking078 - thanks for the info. Side note, the "Black 3 pol small plug" looks indeed like the connector for the 6CD player, but there's already one similar to it connected in it. This is a second one...

One other info, I got lucky and was able to speak with the previous owner of the car, he said the reason why he installed the Xtrons head unit initially was BECAUSE the OEM head unit went black. So that changes a lot of things... i'm longer looking for what I missed but looking for an actual problem, blown fuse, inline fuse/breaker/relay, or checking for loose welds on the head unit, or the modules at the back.

Where would you guys start searching first? Is the head unit more prone to fail, or I should open up the nav unit and check for cold welds or burnt components?

One more thing, @Dking078 - "Are you getting absolutely no picture from your monitor? It is black, but lit? Or dead off black?"

YES is it backlit, but it's only showing black, which makes me believe the head unit is fine, it's just not receiving data.

What do you guys think?

The easiest test I can think of is temporarily swapping navigation units with a friend if possible, to see if the display starts working.

That would be ideal, but the nearest E39 is probably 400 miles away. I live in eastern Quebec, not that many around here.

Anyone with a spare nav unit around here? I'll cover shipping costs or buy it if the price is reasonable.

I have an MKIII w/ at least one nav disk. You're more than welcome to borrow it or buy it.

If no video at all and radio works could the screen backlight have failed rather than there being an issue with the electronics? Although obviously a different device, had this on my iPhone...lcd screen is an lcd screen....just a thought.

As stated in previous post, the screen does lit up, but only show black. When ON, its black with some light shades of white around the edges, when OFF, it's a dark black, completely dead.

I was having the same issue and it was the Nav computer in the trunk. I upgraded to a MKIV just so the Nav screen looked better. I do not use it for navigation, I use my smartphone.

Glad to hear that, everything point at the nav unit in the trunk so I'm crossing my fingers.
