Re-registering in France

Hello. I'm new here. My name is Paul Fearnley and I am an ex-editor of Motoring News, F1 Racing and Motor Sport magazines.
Despite this 'in' I have hit the buffers with a Type Approval snafu.
My question is this: has anybody successfully re-registered a rhd E39 M5 in France?
My sinking feeling is: probably not.
But I remain hopeful.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Hi

I put up some links in this post from a few days ago;

https://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3...-about-m5.html

The first thing you might want to do, is find out if there's a restriction on permanent import of a RHD car in France. If there is, then you'll need to decide if it's worth the cost of overcoming the restriction (if a RHD is allowable) or selling the car off prior to moving to France.

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks, Dennis. The car is already here in France. I have been passed back and forth between BMWs UK and Germany and now have a call into BMW France. Trying to find a definitive reason as to why there is a problem is… a problem. I will let you know how I get on. I must admit, however, that I am not super-hopeful.

I would like to rephrase my original question so as to include this more likely scenario: has any Forum member successfully imported and re-registered a lhd E39 BMW in the UK?
If yes, and if you still have the relevant EU Certificate of Conformity to hand, please could you drop me a line?
I would dearly like to know if your car's Version number and Type Approval numbers are different to those contained in my BMW UK-provided CofC.
Thanks.

Hi Paul,

There's a totally sorry looking LHD E39 M5 on ebay (perhaps on other UK car selling sites too) with a frankly ridiculous £11750 asking price that says it's a 'US Import'. Perhaps get in touch with the seller to see if he's willing to provide the info?

Else, I think things may have changed somewhat, but in 2003/early 04 I imported a F150 Harley Davidson Anniversary Edition truck from Texas to here and it was relatively straightforward. Maybe there's tighter controls on CoC's for older vehicles.

In addition to the above, talk to some UK based car importers, there's plenty who bring in car's from the US for instance and when it comes to German brand cars, I'm sure some dealers who bring in Porsches from the USA might know more.

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks again, Dennis.

Cooper, Heathrow, Hartge… are you a BMW dealer?

If yes, you might have sold our car when it was new… to a bloke whose company made trailers, I think.

Best wishes,

Hi Paul,

Never been a car trader and never will !

Always been a BMW nutcase since around 13 as I live directly behind what used to be Altwood BMW in Slough and walking past the showroom alot !

What's the situation with your 'car' situation and 'France' ? a permanent move there or temporary? or, from your latest update, why the thought of a LHD E39 M5 in the UK given there's plenty of RHD ones here? (there's a specific reason for me to have a LHD E39 M5 here and will look to that when things are in just the right place to do so)

As you probably know, it's relatively easy to import a LHD car/vehicle into the UK, so if this does turn out the way you will need to go, you should be pretty much good to go once all the red tape and inspections are done.

Cheers, Dennis!

Dear Dennis,

I just thought it more likely that readers of this forum might have imported a lhd E39 M5 into the UK rather than doing what I am attempting – and failing – to do, which is import a rhd version into France.

I have been in a world of admin pain since receiving this from BMW UK's homologation department:

According to your EC Certificate of Conformity, the version of your vehicle is 00. Unfortunately, the European Type Approval documentation number e1*98/14*0111*03 does not contain any reference to this particular version, hence the inconsistency mentioned by the French authorities. A new certificate would not help as it would be identical with the one you already have.

I am beginning to wonder if my cars exists in a legal sense.

I just wanted to know if a lhd version has a different Version number than 00 – for that's the only difference between a European version and a British.

Serious arse ache.

Thanks again for your help.
