Transmission Main Bearing

I recently purchased a 2001 M5 with 110k on the odometer. The rear main seal was weeping so we decided to repair it and replace the clutch at the same time. While they had it apart they noticed that the main shaft in the transmission had play in it meaning that the main bearing was going bad. I'm told that the way the bearing is pressed into the housing that it is not replaceable or serviceable; meaning replacing the transmission. I'm concerned about purchasing a used unit not knowing where it came from or how many miles are on it or the condition of the internals. I can purchase a new unit from BMW for $7,500.00 which I will do if I have to.

Has anyone had this experience before or heard of this? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

Don't believe it's not serviceable. It could be a daunting to a diy but a transmission re builder can do it no problem.

for reference check out this guy and this thread, AMAZING and anything pressed in can be pressed out or removed
