CD Changer that plays MP3's

I know there are 2 factory 6-disc changer units for our cars. The older one that only plays CD's, and a newer on that plays MP3 CD's as well.

I have the older one and it recently went out, so I'd like to replace it with the MP3 capable unit.

I found this thread over at bimmerfest that appears to have the info I'm looking for, but wanted to verify before ordering anything.

It looks like this the CD Changer I seek?

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/65129131852/

Has anyone tried to use the Alpine CHM-S640 in it's place?

Thanks,
Chris

My car when I bought it had an Alpine CHA-S634 MP3 CD-Changer in it with an adapter and it worked well. I still have the CD changer and adapter as well. No need for it anymore.

Any chance you'd like to sell that Alpine CHA-S634 to a good home?

What did you upgrade to?

Actually, I would be happy to . I did the NBT retrofit in mine currently, but when I got rid of the Alpine years ago, it was to install a Pioneer AVIC-F90BT. Haven't had any need for the Alpine in a long time, didn't even think about people wanting it, LOL.

Make me an offer by PM and I'll let you know.

How do you like that NBT retrofit? I've actually been into car audio for years, and do plan on upgrading the M's audio in time - it looks like there's a lot of nice head units to choose from these days.

Lots of work to do before that though - a sweet MP3 capable 6-disc is all I need to keep rocking at the moment

I do have some love for the factory head unit, I have to admit. The fact it has 'Board Computer' emblazoned across the top of the screen makes me feel like im in an old sci-fi movie haha

Thanks,
Chris

NBT is hard to go back to anything older. It's just so nice. Sound quality is excellent and the fact that I have full bluetooth functionality, GPS, DVD video, bordcomputer functions, SiriusXM, HDRadio, etc. all with an idrive controller and 10.8" ultra-widescreen monitor that fits in the dash. I'll admit, I don't really use the built-in GPS for navigation very much, but I use it as background while driving everywhere, in split-screen with my entertainment screen on the right. The NBT also has full album art and title info, along with FLAC support and drives larger than 1TB. I have a 500GB SSD with over 375GB of lossless music easily searchable in the car. If I decided to go with the NBT Evo head unit as an upgrade, I could even get CarPlay/Android Auto functionality as well.

That does sound awesome! I didn't even realize there was a retrofit for our cars until I saw your post! That looks like the ultimate audio upgrade for the E39, hands down. Does it work with the steering wheel controls as well?

What are you using for amps/speakers/subs now?

Works with steering wheel controls.

I'm just running the stock amp with a Pioneer mono amp and Pioneer slim wedge box 12" sub mounted to the bottom rear parcel shelf like the BavSound Ghost Sub does. In my wagon though, I'm just using the stock DSP system with DSP sub and it sounds pretty great. I wouldn't say audiophile grade, but nice enough for the amount of time I drive around and want to listen to something other than my muffler deleted, Borla resonated S62 .

So...I guess that means the radio isn't on much?

That's wicked on the NBT retrofit, definitely going to start planning for that! I gotta get those mufflers off first though

Yeah, the S62 sounds so good, I keep the volume down most of the time, but on long trips the exhaust isn't that exciting, so I can turn it up a bit and enjoy some other types of music.

NBT isn't a cheap upgrade, but to me it's worth the investment if you can figure out how to install it . It definitely requires some fabrication and a bit of splicing into existing wiring, so not for the typical M5 owner that doesn't want to mess with it. @TheShafro was talking about making some custom bezels and center console trims for the NBT, but I think it's kind of on the backburner at the moment. I still haven't done anything about a bezel on mine and my controller is just mounted on top of the center console trim for now and it works well, but I'd love for it to finally look like it came that way from the factory. The nav system is really the only thing in these cars that really dates it to the casual passerby, so making a modern infotainment look like it came in these 15+ year old cars really solidifies the reasons why I love these older cars more than the newer ones.
