Running Both Aftermarket Nav and MID? What works?

Wondering if one hooked up both an aftermarket audio/nav system (IE Dynavin or similar) and then hooked up the MID. Would it be possible to change the radio with the MID still? I know most people keep the MID to retain OBC functions, but I want to be able to activate the radio (change stations and volume) with the MID as well. Would be really neat. Would one have to code for a rear MID or get some program (Intravee II or Resler Interface)? Is the MID even hooked up to the audio network of the car anymore when you add an aftermarket nav?

Thanks!

Hi,

If you have an aftermarket head unit like a Dynavin/Avin or a quality item from the likes of Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood etc then all 'control' of it can be done on the unit itself and where fitted/connected, via steering wheel buttons. What's the point of having the MID panel volume/DSP/change radio stations ? it'd be pointless, just reach up a few inches higher and control on the head unit ! Of course, technically once you work out how to interface the MID panel to the specific head unit be it electronically, physically and most likely a combination of both, you could have this setup. It's likely to cost a big wedge of cash too! I'd estimate north of $1000 to have someone with experience of reverse engineering and electronic integration do it.

Cheers, Dennis!

I actually had something else in mind. Was wondering if there'd be a way to do this easily:

Any thoughts? I figure that it would be neat to have rear passenger sunblind control as well a a cig lighter back there. Would be a plus to have a MID there too. I think an aftermarket nav options + intravee works with a rear MID. Not sure about Resler or even how to do it. Was hoping that an extended harness would be all I need and that relocating the MID to the rear instead of the more common glovebox would check all the boxes but it's not that easy is it?

I have the 16:9 screen. You can push any buttons and the MID display will show the changes but the audio comes from the aftermarket unit so basically nothing happens. The aftermarket CAN bus does not work correctly with the MID display.

For example of you press up to change the station or sound track on the aftermarket radio, the MID display will show the preset station change on the OEM radio in the trunk.

Do you happen to know if Intravee or Resler will correct this issue? Or if it's even possible for the software to do that? I'm completely new to Intravee and Resler and do not fully understand what their capabilities are.

EDIT: I talked to RichardP who has completed the mod above and he said it wasn't possible. Not worth doing. I wonder if I can put a monitor in the armrest to emulate/screen share with the eonon unit up front? Would that work as long as the monitor had capacitive touch?

Sorry don't know anything about Intravee or Resler.

I think it's easier and better to just buy a display for the rear.

Agreed, I think I'll just buy a display for the rear, and put it in my E38 armrest along with a remote for the headunit. Should be a simple mod.

Hi,

I think you should've named the topic 'Rear Armest MID panel retrofit' as that is what you are going for! I've met and know Richard many times and he has very in depth knowledge on how the MID and OEM electronics work and interface together. I'd also agree that it's bit of a useless modification, if you did it, it'd be for 'look at me' points!

The Eonon units .. You have researched them, right?!

Cheers, Dennis!
