My (new to me) M5 has been sitting idle when there is snow and salt is on the roads- my 540i has winter tires on it and I have been using that until potentially selling her in the spring... Anyway, the trunk on my 540 broke (wouldn't latch shut)- there is a small spring in the actuator that broke. I bought a box of springs at Home Depot, but the one that fit wasn't strong enough. Then I searched a couple of local hardware stores. Then I bought a used one actuator which was listed as excellent working condition- it arrived with the spring broken (and in very poor condition- seller took it back in return).

Frustrated, I did some net searching, and found a post on another forum- the poster said he went to Ace Hardware and purchased expansion Spring #74 which was a perfect match! Total cost $0.89!! I popped out the actuator, put in the new spring and put everything back together- perfect!

I bought 2 springs in case my M5 spring ever goes :) Anyway, I wanted to post here since I didn't find this info when I searched here and it saves a ton of money/searching to find the correct spring. I drove with the latch broken for a couple of weeks- when the spring is broken the trunk will stay down from gravity, but doesn't latch (nor lock when you lock the car)- the Germans were smart enough to design the lock to fail in the open position thankfully!

Thanks for posting. Was the initial issue that the trunk didn't lock?

I have the exact same problem and even found a remnant of a small spring coil in the trough that surrounds the latch pin. I just ordered a new $157 latch and actuator assembly from the dealership -but if I can fix this problem with a $0.89 spring? Sign me up! Do you happen to have a picture of the spring that I could use to guide me in finding a replacement, in case I can't successfully key off that Ace Hardware part description?

I don't have a pic, but it's just a small spring- i think you'd be better off going by the spring # (expansion spring #74 was essentially a direct replacement) then a picture... I did a search on here how to remove the actuator- the biggest pain in the butt part was getting the small cover off to reveal the screw in the handle/grab area of the trunk- once I got that out it was pretty straightforward. I still have that 540 along with my M5 by the way- never did put her up for sale :)

Hey all, I couldn't find the #74 spring at ACE in person or online, but I ordered a 8-10 springs off McCaster-Carr. I only need one. If anyone needs any of these, I'm happy to drop one in the. mail to you. Looks like some guy on ebay is selling them for $5+$3 shipping. I'm happy to do better than that as I think I spent something like $34 in total including shipping. Just reach out if you have a need.

Edit: in retrospect, I should have checked ebay first!

Hi fmcfad01,
How're you?
I'm writting from Lisbon, Portugal. I have the same issue: the spring from a tailgate block is broken like the chowdah (picture: ). I dont have garage space in my home so I'm parking my car with the luggage rack unblocked on the street. Because of this, urge fix this. What I saw on the Ebay, I need to wait almost a month to receive the spring, what is too long. Could you sell one of your springs and send it me in a fast mail? I'm sorry for post this message here, but haven't found your private contact to do it. Thank you in advance.
