The seller was an older gentleman who had never sold a car to an individual before. My guess is he took it for trade in and they offered him like $3k. Which probably pissed him off.

The story of how it came to me is nuts. I started a thread on bf.c looking for that estoril individual/grey 60k mile E38 that was for sale a year or two ago. A fellow member posted a quote from another forum where a guy was trying to get rid of his 38k mile alpine M sport. I immediately PM'd the guy to delete the post and google searched the username from the quote. He was a bimmerfest member and didn't seem to understand how to use the forum properly. He kept posting in other people's threads trying to get rid of his car and everyone was getting mad at him for it. He posted his number but put a 9 instead of a 0. Then his email asked me to submit a request to prove it wasn't spam so I figured it was a troll. But then he emailed me back with 2 photos. From there, I searched his name and found a vehicle purchase for a Toyota with his address. Punched it in google maps and sure enough, same house that he sent pics from! It was legit. He wanted $6k but had a guy in CA who was also interested. So I bit the bullet and offered $7k to close the deal. Flew down, met him, paid and drove it back to my friend's in Melbourne where we put it on the lift in his shop. Crazy eh? It was meant to be. The strangest part is that I had listed my AMG for sale prior to finding the alpine car.

That guy? He wanted to get rid of the car to put his new Toyota in the garage - cool that you got it.

Yeah, that's the guy! He wasn't lying.. Only one other person ever attempted to contact him oddly enough. I suppose they thought it seemed fishy too. I recognize several forum members names in the threads he posted in.

Really good cars. Not without some warts but mostly electrical stuff nothing fundamental. I had a 2000 740i sport in anthracite. Great car but was too big to be my daily driver and was missing a manual. So went back to an E39 M5. Would love to have both - the E38 for road trips and carrying people around. And the M5 most of the rest of the time !

Unf, great idea and nice job picking up the pristine E38! I just finished a 1500mi trip in the M5 with the wife & kid. As much fun as the drive was I couldn't help thinking about how welcome a few more inches of legroom would be...

Yeah, I feel that the E38 is the perfect chassis. Just needs more power and a 3rd pedal. Having originally owned a well built/modded E34 for 7 years, the E38 is my favorite car BMW ever made. And the S62 is my favorite engine so only natural to bring them together. And I couldn't think of a sexier color combo than alpine/caramel.

Agreed! There is something about the E38 that draws my attention. There is actually a 2000 740 for sale about an hour from me that caught my eye. 133k miles and $5300 though. Hearing that you spent $7k on this low mileage example makes me think that $5300 is a bit high. NO idea what the E38's go for though. If I could figure-out how to keep my E39, buy the E38 and stay married I would!

I basically stole the car so it's not the norm. My guess is that I could fix the few issues and put on BAT and likely see $15-20k. But I would never find another one like it I'm sure. Deals are out there you just have to be patient. There is an alpine white 01 M sport on tan for sale on CL in CA but someone told me the ad just expired. It had 65k miles and a metal sunroof and he was asking $12k. It was my runner up had this car fallen through. KBB on these cars is a joke.

Ok, so here's the start of the actual build thread. Here she was at the start of the day on a beautiful morning in NC (don't worry, it got much hotter and muggier later in the day).

First, I wanted to get the shadowline trim drip rails off in preparation for Brandon's new ones coming in. I wanted to get a good idea of how many clips were on each side since I know they tend to break (and they did). Brandon ordered enough, plus a couple extra, so we should be good. I'll mount the new pieces, then paint the whole length of the old and new drip rails with Rust-O-Leum 2-in-1 paint and primer (which worked great on my e38) so that it's a nice even color for the whole length, instead of brand new rear pieces attached to old faded pieces (I know, hard to believe, right?).

Next I decided to attempt to adjust his sunroof, since he said he was having some wind noise issues. Before I started, the front edge was sitting a bit above the roof, while the rear edge was sitting below the roof. I was able to get the passenger side just right, with the front edge right below the roof and the rear edge right above it:

Front edge:

Rear edge:

Unfortunately, I didn't have as much success on the driver side. I could get the front edge right below the roof, but I couldn't get the rear edge above the roof. I think the lift support might be a bit worn out or slightly out of alignment. Brandon can pull the sunroof cassette when he has his headliner done and check for certain and possibly replace the parts then if he wants.

Front edge:

Rear edge:

Then it was time to pull the seats. I started with the rears:

Then the fronts:

I think I have a seat problem

That's it for today. The main thing was to get the seats removed so I can take them up to Brian's for caramel dying. All door cards and dash are either coming out of my e38 or they were already uninstalled since I bought them for my e38 and never installed them. The main things from that car that need to come out are the rear door cards, but I'll need to pull the seats and console just to get the carpets out to put in Brandon's later. I also want to have all that stuff out of my e38 so that when I bring it back from Brian's, I can have it loaded with a bunch of parts from his house that needs to go to the scrapyard. It's going to be loud driving to Raleigh with no carpets in the car, LOL.

That's it for now.
