02 M5 Ignition, key, steering lock issue

I searched plenty and found many threads with different symptoms to mine.

One day my key won't go in and I notice a metal flap blocking it's entry. I immediately notice that the steering wheel not only isn't locked, but it won't lock at all no matter how far I turn it in either direction.

I forced the key in it started right up. I then pulled the key out halfway and cleaned and lubed the lock assy. Now the flap is open and I can get the key in with a wiggle. It' is tighter sliding in than it used to.

The steering still will not lock with the key out. I'm not sure where to start. Steering lock assy? I really hope I don't need a new tumbler and new keys etc...

Sounds like the lock. Instead of going to BMW go to the local locksmith they can fix most things.

Thanks for the advice, I will do that first.

Does anyone have any insight on what mechanism locks the steering wheel?

It comes out of the lock assembly and for a lack of better word I will say pin, but it is larger. That inserts into a slot in the column.

So if I replace the lock assy I can keep my stock keyset and tumbler?

Hard to say the tumbler is a cylinder that activates and interacts with the other parts. Hard to know until it comes apart. It is probably something like a spring or something that can be fixed. The tumbler is separate to the mechanism. Make sure you use all of the original electric parts like antenna.
