headlight housing question

I'm helping a friend sort his newly aquired 2003 540i touring. He's disabled and needs a good pair of hands to help him, as well as some BMW knowledge.

His passenger headlight is loose. 3 of the 4 mounting points are broken. Looks like if I replaced the back housing, number 3 in the image below, that it would easily solve the problem. Issue is after doing some research it seems the top tabs holding the housing to lens are plastic welded together and not intended to be replaced. The lenses on the 540 are not adhered to the housing from my research either, like the M5 lenses are so that helps.

Can this back housing be purchased separately and installed or does the entire headlight assembly have to be replaced?

part #3:

Thanks for any advice.

Whether its adhered is year dependant (not M5/540 dependant, since they shared the same lights) and 2003 lights are a solid piece. The entire assembly will need to be replaced - some 2001/2002 lights you can just replace the lens but that wont help you with your mounting tabs being broken and you cant do it on 2003 lights anyways.

This is the correct diagram for 2003 lights - interestingly even has a warning on the realoem page saying "The cover glass cannot be replaced. The headlight has to be used."

I thought the e39 touring (non-M) headlights followed the same LCI as the M5. So if it is a 2003, it would not come with the headlights that come apart by the clips, but would have to be handled in the same fashion as the M5 would.

[edit] Disregard, I didnt see that blackxs corrected the breakout diagram.
