If the legitimate sale price of your car was 20K, you could be looking at a sale price of 13K or less. M5 buyers are a picky group. First assuming you have ALL maintenence records, original window sticker, photos of the car on the assembly in Germany, proof that the car has always been stored in a hermetically sealed temeprature controlled garage, and less that 1700 miles, the potential buyer will then whip out his $1000 paint thickness measuring device and take no less than 400 paint thickness measurements on the car. If any one of these measuremements is outside of factory specs (which every single one will be on your beautifly repainted car) he will either become un-interested or offer you the 12-13K I mentioned earlier.

So be aware, a paintjob should be for the car if you are keeping it forever.
I would beg to differ, but only on the condition that the repaint was done at a very high end shop with all the pictures and documentation included (and of course an unreal, outstanding end result). Most everyone knows the paint on these cars basically chips if you look at it wrong since the factory job is anything but super durable. As long as the proper care is taken by said high-end shop resulting in a concours quality job (which is the only way I'd repaint my M5) which would probably run $10k or so to get done, I would pay more for such a car than one with worn and chipped, orange-peeled factory paint job that looks like crap.

As times goes further into the future, such will be a non-event on concours quality low-mileage M5s. It already is on vintage cars of all makes.

Having Bryan Burnworth of Peachstate Detail do a full correction on my M5 a couple of years ago resulted in an amazing outcome: he wet sanded out a number of rather deep scratches, etc, and it is an incredible site to see the LeMans Blue now in the full sun. Prior to him doing the work, I did a number of chips on the hood and the front bumper cover with Dr Color Chip, and surprisingly, it stayed put and still looks great. I'm guessing a lot of people with tired paint could get by with some remedial chip filling followed later on by a full correction done by an experienced individual (who are very hard to find since there are many out there with the title "detailer" but few with the skill of someone like Bryan).

I enjoyed reading your post, but- respectfully, I think people should do what works for them.
If you did anything in your response it was to highlighting the foolishness that some go to just
to be able to say "I did this". Or "I had that done". It's a CAR!! And I say that as someone who
loooooooooooooooves his M5. But at the end of the day she goes in the garage and I go into'
the house with my family.

Can you imagine how many poor people we could feed by just collecting 1% of the $$$ we spend
to modify-upgrade-improve-slam-wrap-PAINT-chip-tune-flash our cars. We could end world hunger.

So I expect to get grief for my comments....

Garage
Local shop in Charlotte, NC gave me a verbal quote of "about $7k" for a color change from Estoril Blue back to the stock white. It would be an involved job, as the blue was done very thoroughly (well into the trunk, behind fabric panels, well into the engine bay, etc).

It's hard to know it was white unless you look behind panels inside the car.

It's not likely going to be worth it. I'd wrap it, but I have a LOT of chips and dings and the like. So at this point, drive it, have fun, and see what happens in teh future.

Hi,

This is a mainly USA centric forum so I'd suggest you contact as many local and reputable bodyshops in your area and perhaps to another 50-100 mile radius of where you are to get quotes. The estimates will vary depending the level and quality of work you want done. You could go for a basic rub down, mask off and paint level which will use entry level/budget preparation materials and paint/lacquer, to one which removes glass panels and trim, internal trim, engine bay area preparation and also full treatment of any rust and dents, replacing any panels etc and right up to a full bare metal/shell respray and using high quality paints and lacquers etc.

Cheers, Dennis!
