Sport vs. Luxury

Question regarding 2002 interior options.

I am in the process of ordering an M5 and am wondering if any of you know whether what used to be called "Extended Leather" is now called the "luxury" interior. That is to say, if this new vernacular means that luxury equals leather on the dash, sills, lower dash, etc. I'm also curious if any of you know if the seats associated with the new luxury package are like the 1999/2000 heritage seats (somewhat reminiscent of the older M5) or if the're just using the "heritage" leather on the "sport seat" which was an alternate on 99/00 and, to be clear, is more like the one found in the current M3.

I've gone up and down the dealership and nobody there seems to have a clear answer. I figured the real experts would be the enthusiasts. If anyone can clear this up for me, I'd appreciate it.

Happy New Year.

There's no longer "extended leather"... The dash and headliner are now the same ("man made") in both trims.

The major difference between Luxury and sports is the leather-type/color/stitching-pattern on the seats, and some trim color options (plus availability of rear/side sunshades on sports only)..

2000 to 2018 (sold).
'01 M5 - Titanium Silver/Siilverstone/Aluminum trim
- Split seats
- deleted spoiler
- M Audio
- 8000 phone
- Voice Reco
- TV tuner

I'll answer half of your question and guess on the other half. First, the factual answer:

"Extended" means there is no dash covering, so this goes with the Sport interior. I say "covering," because '00 is the last year for real leather on the dash. The new covering is very nice, but it isn't leather.

So, the "All Leather" (which comes with Luxury) is the one with more leather in the car. I'm not sure if the tops of the doors, lower dash, and/or the pillars where the front seat belts anchor is real leather like my '00 in the '02 or not, but the "All" (or Luxury) option gives you more of it.

As for the guess: I would think that the Luxury still has the vertical stitching and right-angle seams on the seating surfaces as opposed to the no stitching and contoured seams on the Sport. To my knowledge, the Nappa Heritage leather has never been available on the sport seats (only the Nappa Point).

The luxury have a "ribbed" stiching vertically down the seats and the sport is more of a solid piece with a texture that reminds me of Ostrich (I think). I've also seen some two-tone seat photos of the sport seat - not to my taste, but something to consider - not sure if the lux seats have that option - my sport seats are all black and they look good that way.

Lux gets you wood and Sport gets the option of aluminum or wood trim - a much more obvious and visible difference in the choice - the BMW Web site lets you model the car and may give you a slightly better idea of how those compare - whoops - no, they only show the sport seats.

There are other subtle differences like the sun-shade - a lux '02 I saw had chrome pullups on the door locks and my sport has black - I did not care for the chrome, although they'd be easier to glance at from the exterior to confirm a locked car - either way, those could be eaily changed. That car seemed to have the same amount of leather covering as my car, so I think now it is only a texture difference you are getting.

The wood or aluminum trim would be a much bigger deal to change out - but I've read where some have.

great photos of the sport interior in black - hold them up to a mirror to see how yours would look!

At any rate - congrats on your car order - it is a fine car.

I've had the same problem. I have a 2000 that has the rear sun shade and I wanted to get it in a 2002 and was rejected by BMW. They now only offer it in the Sport interior, which really limits you if you care for luxury in your interiors. I'm now trying to see what can be done by working with BMW Individual. I hope I can work it out!

Stem, they wouldn't do it for me.

The said the luxury had thicker leather and the shades wouldn't work.

All I know is back in '99 when I ordered my car, the dealer said "don't get the extended leather, it's not going to last on the dash!". Of course, he's keeping in mind South Florida's intense sun, but maybe BMW's long term testing told them the same thing and they pulled it for '01 up?

01 Luxury Leather

I have a July 2001 US market build with caramel luxury leather interior. The trim in mine is burl oak. The luxury interior is gorgeous, and you would be happy with that option.

Then following describes the interior coverings in my vehicle.
  • Headliner is black Alcantara
  • Rear dash is black Alcantara
  • Front and rear pillars are black Alcantara
  • Upper window frames in the doors are not covered (black matte finish)
  • The center pillars are black Alcantara to the bottom of the windows, then black leather to the floor
  • Door window sills (above wood trim) are black leather (chromed door lock buttons)
  • All 5 headrests are caramel leather
  • Rear center armrest is caramel leather
  • All 5 seating surfaces are caramel leather
  • Double parallel stitching in center of the seats creates 7 ribbed areas, with the center ribbed area slightly larger. The outer surfaces on the seats are smooth caramel leather.
  • Center passenger seat is smooth caramel leather
  • Seatbacks are leather
  • Upper dash is black leather
  • Lower dash (beneath wood trim) is caramel leather
  • Console sides are caramel leather
  • Center armrest (phone installed) is caramel leather
I refer to "black leather" for the dash, window sills and center pillars. In each case above I assume that the material is natural leather. I've seen the earlier posting asserting that 2001 and later versions do not have leather on the dash. I have examined the material in my dash carefully. To my eyes, the material appears to be natural leather. That conclusion is supported by the variation in the grain pattern between sections of the dash, the puckering of the material in concave areas, and the stitching along the edge of the top dash. If the dash is not real leather, then it is a very good synthetic. I'd be more inclined to believe that the material on the tops of the door sills is synthetic.

I, too, was told that sunshades are not available with the luxury leather because the leather is too thick to allow the installation of the shades.

My 00, delivered 12/99 has "sport seat" on the window sticker. The seats are two-toned, black and silver. Was the two-tone only an option on the sport? Was the trim option of metal or wood available on the sport option?

Pics of Luxury Seats ???

I'm ordering my 2002 M5 this month, but am considering the Luxury Option with the Leathered Dash and Tranny Tunnel. They told me, its an extended leather. However, I need to know what the Luxury Seats look like ? No one, nor the website, has any pics and I must know what it looks like to order...
Any pics of the dash would be nice as well.

The dealer only has the Sport Interior with Aluminum...Yuk, too cold !

Thanks in advance !!!
