Thanks to xr4tic for his inspiration here :M5thumbs:

Crown Auto delivered on my expectations: delivery in less than 5 days and products in stock. Also received great customer service from JD who sent a follow up email to keep me in the loop. One item was missing from the package (1 circlip), wasn't a big deal as it costs $0.61. Plus, JD mailed me it so no big deal.

Parts/Tools Needed:

1 x 25117546373 Shift Lever
1 x 25111220600 Shift Bearing
4 x 25111220439 Yellow Washers
2 x 25111220379 Circlip

Needle Nose Pliers
Long Flathead Screwdriver
Lithium Grease
Jack Stands + Jack
Soapy Water

Installation: I followed this link
Job Duration: 2 hours

It was my first time doing this, and had a difficult time removing the circlip from the OE shifter. The space is very tight, and I could only raise the car so high with my jack. If I were to this again, it would easily take 30 minutes max.

Some things to note in this install:
1. The rubber boot that covers the shifter and the opening needs to be dipped on some soapy water. It makes it a lot easier to slide this sucker over the shifter and pushed into the opening.
2. The yellow washers are optional since the E60 lever has bushings that protrude to compensate for the washers on the E39 lever. I got 4 just in case, since they pennies each. Even with 1 yellow washer, I could not fit the circlip on.
3. I would buy at least 2+ circlips, as the 1 that I had did fall into the heat shield. Luckily, I could reach my hand in far enough to retrieve it.
4. Jack the car as high as you can do so safely. The space is definitely tight.
5. The shift bearing can be easily removed by simply taking a needle nose plier, rotating the bearing about 1/4 counterclockwise, inserting a flathead screwdriver into the slot on the clip, and pulling gently. I tried to pry that sucker out before I learned I could simply rotate it out of the locking position.
6. When reinstalling the bearing, make sure the "flaps" are pointed out towards the doors. This way, you can simply push it back in.
7. Otherwise, VERY EASY DIY.

Impressions:
I originally purchased the Z3M shifter last year, but sold due to concerns of notchiness and shifting effort. In reading reviews about the E60 shifter as an unbranded Dinan shifter, I was skeptical at how much improvement I would actually notice. After the install you can immediately feel the difference in the throws. The shifts are 100% more crisps (click click click between gears) and the knob sits about 1/2 inch below the OE lever. For the ~$70 I paid for this mod, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The "side to side" slop is eliminated, and the shifts are like butter. The "rubber" feel of the OE lever has been eliminated completely. I was ultimately looking for the shortest throw and shortest knob height, but what this E60 lever delivers is PERFECT. I would have been unhappy with the Z3M. You can't beat this mod for the price. For those who feel that the Dinan counterpart is on the expensive side, I urge you to give this one a try. And when I say the throws are reduced, I'm talking dramatic enough to know you have an SSK while maintaining the OE appeal.

BTW: I have 4 yellow washers and 1 circlip that I did not use. If anyone needs 1+, let me know and I can snailmail it over to you.

The ZHP won't match with my wood-grain trim :sad1:

The circlip was definitely a pain. I was able to reach 2 hands in that small area to remove it, causing it to fall into the heatshield.

It's a great mod at a rock bottom price. Thanks to Thrilos5 for originally recommending it to me.

I also did the e60 shifter and new bushings, and the results were just as spectacular. The car should have come stock like that!

Big difference, but some of the side to side slop comes back after 500 miles or so...

You say that you replaced bushings at the time of doing this installation yourself. What bushings would those be? Are they on the shift linkage? What are the part numbers if that is the case? Also, if some of the side-to-side slop that you are talking about comes back, is there any way to permanently remedy this so that it's not an issue in the future?

It would be nice if there was something out there that would eliminate this altogether. I would prefer not to pay UUC's prices, though they make awesome products, from my experience/ impression. I know that they have their Double Shear Selector Rod and it would elimate the slop. Does BMW have anything OE that would be tough enough to withstand the demands thrown at so it won't dissolve if you decide to power shift to burn the tool in the Pontiac Gran Prix GXP's ***?:byee55amg

The ZHP weighted knob requires a new boot also, correct?

#13 ·
You can recycle the old boot if you cut it where it meets the old knob.

I used a zip tie on the inside so you can't see it and it looks normal.

Anyways, I wish I did more research before I bought my UUC short shifter...
So, would the zip tie be on the "inside" of the new knob, keeping the boot in place? Or how would that work?

You could always sell your UUC SSK ;)

I'm a huge fan of the Z3 2.8 short shifter. I as well had the Z3M which was too short. I beleive the Z3 2.8 shifter is shorter than the E60 545i.

#16 ·
Have you ever tried the Z3 1.9 shifter? I hear its identical/similar to the E60 545i one. When you say shorter, are you referring to just the shift knob height or the throw as well?

I know I keep saying this mod is on my list, but I'm serious. It is. Right after the 14816s.

Thanks for the informative post. I appreciate you taking the time to document it.

Let me know if you need any of those yellow washers or a circlip ;)

Thanks Stika for that picture. Looks great. Can't even tell there is a ziptie in there. :M5thumbs:

All the bushings that have to do with the shift linkage, including the shift knuckle on top of the trans. that is a royal PITA to get at, were replaced. This includes the plastic ball cup that the selector sits in, and the plastic bushings on the shift rod.

I purchased the shifter bushing kit and rod from Pelican Parts for a grand total of $149 or so. They have all the numbers and pictures on their website.

I couldn't tell you if the DSSR or whatever UUC calls it fixes the side to side slop permenantly. People say they have felt no difference when just adding the DSSR to a stock setup. I don't know if anyone has tried it yet with the e60 shift rod.

I believe member xr4tic [link] has the DSSR w/ the E60. Might want to contact him to get his input...

Would you be willing to help a fellow SD owner install this if I bought one?

#29 ·
Yeah for sure. I'll be helping bugzy with his when he buys the lever. Just let me know when

btw, M55555 (John) has helped me a lot too ;)

great guy !!

btw ... when all the San Diego guys going to make it out to the local meets?

#30 ·
Thanks man!! ... are you going tonight?

I work less than 2 miles from the meet.

I drove my beater 93 Toyota Pickup today.

Does anyone know whether or not the E60 shifter lever will work in conjuntion with the UUC DSSR? Because I did order my shifter and all related bushings and circlips from Bavarian Autosport a couple weeks ago. They are currently sitting in my office at home waiting for warmer weather or a space heater to go in the garage before I install them. I am pretty excited though.

On a side note, Bavarian Autosport did price match the Crown Auto prices that had been quoted in one of the replies earlier in this post. And there is a store on eBay that sells the UUC DSSR. A generic search of "BMW E39 M5", "BMW E39 540i" or "BMW UUC DSSR" should return that as a result. I believe that they had it listed as a Buy It Now for $129.99 (USD) plus shipping. Sounds like a decent price to me. All you have to do is specify your year and model.

You'll really like the new shifter. Are you going to order the ZHP knob also, as others have suggested, to go along with your DSSR purchase?

#36 ·
Parts FINALLY ordered, thanks Andre! I should have it in by next weekend if all goes well. I have been meaning to do this for months.

I also ordered the weighted ZHP. I really liked it on azaytsev's beast when we had our IL meet last fall.

Thanks again for a great thread!

Sounds great Eric. Let us know what you think about it once its all put into place

#40 ·
The ZHP is non-illuminated. You'd have to custom wire it to do it.

#45 ·
I don't remember whether or not I saw that message, but go ahead and email JD @ crownauto to verify. I think it should be fine.

Can someone post pics of the before and after shots (especially the height)...thanks

#46 · (Edited)
Are you looking for the height after installation? I posted up a comparison of the levers only, but I don't think that's what you are looking for? :dunno: I can take a picture of me measuring the height from the base to the top of the knob and you can compare it with your stock one?

#49 ·
Done and done! I couldn't be happier. Anyone on the fence, just do it. It's more precise, shorter height, shorter throws and a good amount of slop is gone as well. This is EXACTLY what it should have been from the factory as others have stated.

Coupled with my new clutch (+ UUC clutch-stop) it feels like a new car.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Nice! Glad it all worked out for you. Did you get the ZHP knob or retain the OEM?

#51 ·
I've ordered a ZHP but accidentally ordered something else first. It's like the OEM but without the polished ring on the bottom or the attached boot. It's the same height as the original I believe. I'll look into it more tomorrow as I'll probably toss it in the classifieds. It has the right PN so I am not sure what happened.
