Adventures of the ///M Waffe

This is a little blog for the ///M cave and our small group of E34 M5 and E30 M3 owners that hang out in the cave.

Things that don't fit into specific threads or questions

We have 4 E34 M5s, 2 x E30 M3s an E9 coupe and my 540/5

Jacob also has an E39 and an F10 30th Anniversary M5 in the USA

We are slowly educating him on the joys of the older M5s

We get together most Saturdays to do work on our cars and hang out

Here's some photos from today.

Jacob brought his M5 up from Central Java for a gearbox change and some minor servicing

... Turbines , there's only one set in the group on Taffy's M5 (GA25331) , we accept anyone , even Turbinati

None of us are professional mechanics , we have a couple of tame aircraft engineers that do most of the serious wrenching and between us we have the largest stock of new and used E34 ///M parts in Indonesia (it now half fills a 20ft container)

We are doing a lot of valve shim adjustments on S38 / S14 engines as none of the dealers have the tools or spares in stock and we've got this down to about 4 hours now including the ITB balance.

I love to experiment , it keeps my mind active and due to being on the *** end of the BMW worldwide supply chain (parts are 4 to 8 weeks away) we improvise and build a lot of things that most people can have delivered to their door the next day.

Fuel consistency is also a problem and we're developing our own octane booster which we test with our own cars.

As Jakarta's traffic is now officially the World's worst we have also modified our cars for existing local conditions with upgraded cooling systems , when the M5 was new the traffic was probably a third of what it is now so keeping the S38s cool and reliable is one of our biggest challenges and we've pretty well solved most of the cooling problems.

So this is our little private workshop for our own cars and close BMW friends ... if anyone else has a similar group or informal workshop days let's hear your story.

I haven't been posting much lately but I check new posts every few days.

Time flies and a lot has happened in the last 8 months.

GA25324 - My M5 is still sitting in the warehouse with the engine in pieces , it's been 3 years now.

GA25331 - Jacob bought Taffy's M5 as Taffy focuses on his new business. The first thing Jacob did was pull the german grandpa wheel covers off (turbines) and put some TS covers on and both his E34 M5s get a good work out around the mountains of Central Java

My BMW Willys Jeep project - we started it , pulled the M40B18 and Getrag 240 out of an E30 318 and I designed an adapter using the BMW guibo, the output shaft, a machined down first gear of a Willys T90 3 speed gearbox and mashing them together. Currently all my staff are busy providing repair support on an ATR72 turboprop (a year now) so while cash flow is good we are all flat out on work projects.

AREA 351 - I bought 135 acres of farmland 75 mins outside of Adelaide South Australia a few months ago, it has an airstrip right outside the front fence (owned by a long term friend) and it was always part of the dream to have an aerobatic aircraft and airstrip. I named the block AREA 351 (351 is it's road number). It has dry lakes and an air strip just like Area 51 but the only alien will be my Indonesian GF.



I'll put up a big workshop first with some living area and then build a house.

With the explosion of traffic in Jakarta in the 5 years since I bought the M5 there is now no point in driving an M5 here , it will sit in traffic and melt. I'm leaning towards sending the M5 to Australia , although we have tough speed limit enforcement my land is 33 minutes from the new Tailem Bend Motorsport Park with a 7.7km circuit The Bend Motorsport Park

The local roads near the farm are empty but there's the occasional kamikaze kangaroo so need to keep your eyes open.

I love the farm , I can go over and chat with my neighbors who I've known for years and I only have 5 other farm houses within a 5km radius. Big supermarkets are 20 minutes away at the 'big smoke' at Murray Bridge (to the north), great pub counter meals and the murray river are 10 minutes away (to the east) and good dining and wineries (20 mins to the west). Outback isolation and living but still within easy access of civilization when needed. The sunsets and night skies are outstanding. For my American friends this part of South Australia is a lot like West Texas and Murray Bridge is the sister city of Laredo.

It's the other end of the spectrum from the crowded metropolis of Jakarta. Population of the closest town to the farm is 295 , greater Jakarta is 25 million (official) but probably more like 50 million (unregistered workers and residents).

With the rise of radical islam in Indonesian politics I plan to be spending most of my time in Australia by 2019 , still keep the business here but not live here (fly in fly out for projects) , after 17 years here it was a tough call but it's time to go home, the country is changing and as a 'super minority' I'm in the firing line as xenophobia is on the rise. I'll set up a parallel aviation and industrial salvage and trading business in Australia.

I'll never sell my E34 M5 and when the time is right it will be back on the road better than ever.

Thanks Chris, with all the craziness in the World I want a quiet place to tinker and relax. Area 351 will also be self sufficient with electricity (solar, gensets, battery back up) and water (rain water tanks) so when the zombie apocalypse comes I'll be okay.

I bought another running E34 530/5 (V8) cheap. Parts car for my 540/5 , the M60B40 dropped compression (big time) in one cylinder so it will go back to being a 530 for a while until I find another M60B40 or M62B44

I found out the sulphur levels in the fuel here are EIGHT times the USA / Europe, not good news for a Nikasil block

Imported tax and duty free by one of the embassies so the car had to be destroyed or re-exported. As it had minor flood damage it was destroyed. 47,000 kms

Thanks 1day , I've set aside 5 hectares for the house, workshop and 'storage yard' for cars, aircraft and trading stock

30 years from now it will be a 'barn find' site in some magazine.

The other 50 hectares will be share farmed , keeps the weeds down and bings a bit of money in.

It has a really neat dry lake which could be set up as a small dirt track and skid pan for when friends drops by :) Dries out very quickly on the edges and is dead flat.

Welcome back to South Australia Tony......well almost!

That's a very nice part of the world you've purchased.
I went past there only a couple of days ago on the way back from an Eastern states holiday.
When time permits, I like taking the Wellington ferry, then the back roads to town instead of the freeway.
I know of another person who has already secured land near the new TB Motorsport Park with plans to offer race car agistment.

When the time comes to register your M5, I have first hand experience getting an imported HD92 through Regency Park.
As the document says, it's not a precedent but I doubt the requirements would be any different.

Great part of SA , it hasn't changed that much in the triangle of Wellington - Mulgundawa - Brinkley area for probably 50 years , you'd swear you're in the outback but still 75 mins from Adelaide and 20 mins to Murray Bridge , Wellington pub (good meals) and the river 10 mins away.

55 next week so time to think about coming home.

As you know the roads are empty , Brinkley road has regular fuzz but Flagstaff doesn't as it has some tricky bends, tractors towing grain silos and roos at night for the people that don't know the road.

Having an airstrip right next door was a big plus for me and I've known the owner 25 years so once I get my pilot medical back I have as much flying as I want

I know of another person who has already secured land near the new TB Motorsport Park with plans to offer race car agistment.
M5 owners always welcome , especially once I have a shed and workshop set up , it could come in handy for some interstate and big smoke (Adelaide) people.

I'm back on the block around 12 June for 2 or 3 weeks putting up gates and fences , getting an SA drivers license again etc. So if you're up for a counter lunch at the Wellington pub I'll buy lunch.

I'll have 2 M5s coming back , GA25324 which will be a road car and GA25388 (aka Eurotrash) which will be a dedicated track car

I've set aside 10 hectares of land for storage as there will probably be a bunch of aircraft stored there (trading stock) and I'm a terrible bower bird

Other cars heading back will be my 1946 Willys Jungle Racer which I'll have to register as a hot rod , 1964 EH Holden 179M Sedan (140k kms), 1964 Holden wagon, lowered with a 202 cube red motor (kms unknown) and a 1974 VW Safari convertible (the Thing). I might keep my Jeep J20 pick up in Indo, haven't decided yet.

Holdens will be sold off when the price is right.

This weeks acquisition was a 1956 Chrysler Industrial 354 cu in hemi V8 engine in running condition so the collection continues , I've literally got 2 40ft containers of car parts for Jeeps and BMWs plus my selected collection of aircraft bits for future projects. It will be a bit of an Aladin's cave when it's all set up.

Yes, good question, I actually had to "change" very little but it still took a fair bit of work.

The lack of an Australian Compliance Plate on a personally imported vehicle means South Australia can't (or won't) just rubber stamp a car for registration. The fact my car has been in Australia since '98 and previously registered in 2 other states meant nothing to SA, hence the list of requirements. Yes, Federation was 116 years ago and those requirements are all ADRS's (Australian Design Rules) but I guess they need a bit more time to agree on Australia-wide criteria.......

So, long story short, it had to be pretty much flawless to pass a full roadworthy inspection rather than the usual cursory VIN/chassis/engine no inspection and it wasn't. Most of the stuff I did was routine maintenance which I would have done anyway at some point but I had to bring it all forward. You may not get away with an ///M-Waffe exhaust special though, and ride height will need to be a minimum if 100mm off the ground.

The only fundamental differences I can see between UK and Oz specs are the integral high-mounted brake light and the imperial units on the dash cluster. The speedo had already been changed but the odometer and oil temp are all still miles/farenhiet. It also had an el-cheapo aftermarket high-mount brake light which was fine.

I made sure I put child restraint anchors in each of the 3 rear seat positions. The captive nuts were all there from factory but the parcel shelf hadn't been pre-drilled. I've since changed all that and fitted an Oz spec parcel shelf with manual sun-blind and integrated stop light although the rear glass is still not quite correct.

I have a stock exhaust system in the spares pile

I have a metric dash, not sure on the child restraints.

The anchor points will be there which is all that's required, even if the rear shelf isn't drilled and plugged.
I just fitted anchors to all 3 so as to draw attention to the fact they were there.
They were left overs from the baby seat years....

Pretty sure I once Vmax'd my old turbo Subaru on either Brinkley or Flagstaff Rds many years ago, which in hindsight, given the roos and rozzers, seems rather foolish. There are much better roads for this elsewhere. :)

These old Holdens will always have some value but current demand seems to be for late model V8 Commodores, presumably to stash them away before they cease production later this year.

I really thought Australia was the last haven of automotive common sense....and you guys are indicating that the authorities are interested in rear seat child seat mounting points and post-cat exhaust....on a '91??

That really sucks.

Really? Child seat mounting points on a '91? Never seen that. Never looked for it either. No one inspects that, here, that I've ever seen.

We just handcuff the little SOB's to the rollbar...... ;)

I think this is a hang over from the old colonial days

While Australians are easy to get on with our government institutions are not and no point arguing , just do the child restraints if you want you're car registered

I'll be arriving on 12 June but we can catch up for lunch anytime while I'm there , enjoy your 50th mate :)

I have to pull down a big insulated shed in Whyalla while I'm in SA , it's free if I demolish it.

Basically a big cold store used for food ingredient manufacture so it will make an excellent 'machinery shed' / workshop and temporary living quarters. It has a big air conditioner so a lot more comfortable than the typical tin shed

Holdens + VW

I bought the Holdens because the 'price was right' , I have no interest in restoring or modifying them

Good cars in their day but so dated to drive now , not fun.


1964 Holden EH Wagon

Classic shape with period correct wheels , 195 fat tyres , period correct 'mag' wheels, 202 manual but 4 wheel drums with booster. Lots of bog in the bodywork , it would need to be done from scratch but it's complete and it runs , good for basis for a restoration

Late 1963 Holden EH 179M (HP block) Special Sedan

This is the 'original Aussie Sports Sedan'. A Holden 179M (HP block) 3 speed manual. This was the car that kicked off the muscle car wars between Holden and Ford which ended up with the Ford 351 Phase 3 Falcon, E49 Chargers and XU-1 and later V8 Toranas.

I haven't checked the engine number but I think this is a complete numbers matching car including the engine which is an extremely rare find. The engine looks original.

It's done about 85,000 miles which I believe to be genuine.

I like the still stock interior , that's hard to find in Australia

At the time I bought them I was in a quiet time at work and thought buying old collectible cars in Indonesia and exporting them back to Australia might be an opportunity then I've been flat out on a big project, moved warehouses, bought the block in SA etc so all my hobbies and side projects are on hold.

1976 VW Type 182 Kurierwagen

Known as The Thing in the USA they are a very cool little car , VW 1600 engine, Kombi gearbox , Karmann Ghia floor pan and a fiberglass body. Originally built for the German Army then civilian versions built. Indonesia was one of the few countries to assemble these in RHD

I will sell both of the Holdens (although I do like the shape of the Holden Wagon) and the VW will go if the money is right.

Yes Chris, Australian Design Rules are (or at least used to be) some of the most stringent in the world and any private imports have to comply with the rules that were in place at the time of manufacture.
This is common sense and I agree with it.
Unfortunately, that's pretty much where automotive common sense ends in this country.
The rest, like rules, speed limits, enforcement and driver training is farcical, lowest common denominator stuff.

Nice shed btw, bit bigger than the 3.6 x 4.5m I'm about to put up!
If the EH sedan is a genuine S4, it's rarity should guarantee a reasonable return.

Yes I want back , but off the grid to stay as far away from the government, councils and whiney neighbors etc as I can. I miss 1990's Australia and I can pretend it still exists at the farm. Australia has become an over regulated nanny state , the OH+S to pull down that shed is a lot different than 20 years ago when I left Oz :). I prefer to be in Oz though compared to where Indonesia is heading.

It's not an S4 but the 179M , HP block with steel crank but no big fuel tank and the other bits, base model before the S4 parts went on.

I'll have to look at the VIN number again as from memory it was a late '63 but the 179M wasn't available until Jan '64

EH225M = Special Sedan manual
9144 = build number
S = Sydney

To be honest I bought the EH , cleaned it , spent a few nights researching and then parked it in the shed. It runs beautifully and still has good compression.

Look at the tables below

While the fines aren't that excessive (AU$1 is about US 80 cents) it's the demerit points. You can easily clock up enough demerit points in a week traveling at 10 to 20kmh over the limit and then lose your license for 3 to 5 months.

I spoke to some truck drivers and they drive 5kmh under the speed limit , being constantly on the road they want to be sure they don't clock up any demerit points.

On my recent 3 week trip to South Australia I used cruise control on the rental car 90% of the time.

It's a great spot and the very antithesis of Jakarta.


Interesting observation about speeding and not one you'll hear from authorities.
Presumably because it doesn't fit their one-dimensional road safety strategy of lower speed limits and tolerances and increased detection, fines and penalties.
Actually, drink driving and mobile phone use receive a good deal of enforcement attention which is a good thing.


With speed detection however, at least locally, it's so easy for the authorities to generate income from cameras that their locations are quite predictable.
They're even published daily and enforcement is largely outsourced to the private sector.
While there's always a chance you'll get nabbed by a random patrol, they also stick to well trodden paths where the hit rate is going to be high, or where traffic volumes dictate it for safety reasons.
Meanwhile, I pushed well into 3 figures on the gravel between Area 351 and Hartley.....


Disclaimer for Eero:
This isn't Finnish gravel with insane crests and lakes everywhere.
Smooth, flat, straight and wide. No Sisu required.
And no fines indexed to income either.

On the speed limits there's some really dumb results on the Murray Bridge freeway , everyone has their cruise control set to 110kmh and due to slight speed variations in the cruise controls up and down hills traffic then tends to bunch up resulting in these clusters of cars getting closer to each other and then as a group slowing down as nobody wants to overtake.

This is way different to this stretch of road in the 90's , even at 130 or 140 you would have a couple of cars bomb past you at 160 plus.

I couldn't handle it , I set 115 to 120 for a few minutes just to clear the pack then back to 110 before hitting the next group then back off just before the average speed camera. I haven't seen any tickets yet so looks like it worked.

120 to 130 on the back roads is still super safe and 160 if you keep your eyes open for wildlife and live stock.

On the road in the photo below (Langhorne Creek Road) you would be lucky to see half a dozen cars in the 40km drive to Strathalbyn

I didn't see one kangaroo this trip but saw 5 COWS and 1 sheep on the road. The sheep was at night (pitch black on the Palmer Road) and I thought I was seeing things initially, it was so dark it looked like the sheep was floating mid air (it wasn't of course) , an optical illusion of the sheep only being illuminated on a slight crest by the headlights.

I think the biggest killer on these roads now is fatigue and boredom , with the speed up a bit you're alert , at the speed limit it's easy for the mind to wander.

I've been quiet the last few months as busy putting up a temporary 737-800 repair facility in Sarawak Malaysia

Looks like I'll finally have enough money in the bank to rebuild my M5 engine once all my invoices have been paid.

There's absolutely no point in owning even a 'quick' car in Jakarta now , the city has finally hit constant grid lock hence my lack of urgency to repair my M5.

It's been 6 months since I posted

Some updates

1. I did a deal with Jacob to buy GA25331 (Taffy's M5 now with TS) which will go to Bali when I move there later this year. I've had enough of Jakarta.

2. Both GA25324 and GA25388 will be shipped to my farm in South Australia later this year

3. I bought a 1967 Cessna 182K meat bomber project with a Continental 540 (standard is a 470 cube) which will consume most of my spare time and cash this year. Last flight was June 2016 and needs the full SIDS corrosion inspection. I've been down on the farm for a few months (on one day the temperature was 47 deg C during the day and 17 that night) working on the Cessna and chilling out after a record 2017 for the company. Longest holiday I've ever had and it felt good.

4. The bend motorsport track (7.7km) has just opened with is 30 mins from my farm. One of the reasons I bought the property.

5. Bought a 2002 Mitsubishi TK Triton 4WD for the farm , 3 litre V6, 5 speed, LSD. 250k kms. Goes great

6. Finishing off my long running ATR72 repair on Lombok Island , finally got an empty hangar which I have to dismantle over the next month.

I haven't given up on my M5s but on the back burner for the moment.

It's a rental , it's going back to Brisbane.

Will be pulled down and shipped out in 3 weeks , the whole thing fits into 2 x 40ft containers through good design.


What happened to the refrigerated shed from Whyalla?
We started doing some exploratory dismantling prior to mobilising a full team and discovered the cold store foam panels were full of 'normal' styrofoam not the fire resistant or fire proof materials I was expecting with a 2002 build date.

With the panels being additionally butt-glued as well as the normal mounting bolts there was no way to pull it apart without using angle grinders with cutting discs in certain areas and I could see the building burning down from an internal panel fire. Once the foam starts to burn you can't stop it and it would probably have taken out the operating production facility next door. 100% this building was going to catch fire even with preparation and precautions.

I sat down with the company site manager and went through all the risks , we came to the conclusion it was best to demolish the structure with an excavator. It wasn't worth the risk.

Now the plan is to buy a new shed.

It's a good idea !

The M60B40 engine is out due to massive drop in compression in one cylinder

It's back to an M60B30 ... yawn

I scored some E60 530 wheels and tyres so they've gone onto the car

I don't drive it much at the moment so it sits in my workshop

Test flight by factory test pilots yesterday

Other than a quick pitch trim adjustment this turkey is cooked (Mt Rinjani volcano in the background)

Now I can take the rest of the year off and wait for the crash alarm to ring ... :smile

I specialise in project support to aircraft OEMs for heavy repairs in remote areas.
