For those who get the Bimmer magazine. Look in issue #96 FEB 2011. You can also order this issue if you don't have a subscription. This has the article on the E12 M535i, R80 G/S road trip. Excellent article.

I do not believe the e12 version had the M88 engine. I had the regular euro 12 valve 6 banger. Only the e28 version had the m88 24 valve motor.

I agree, no BMW built E12's received a Motorsport engine.

bmw M635csi and M6

hello everybody


the most important is that you have a m88/3 or s38b35 under the hood.

for me is the m635csi or the m6 the same.

I always believed that the m6 was the export name (of the e24 m model)(fur US and Canada)

E24 M635CSI 1985
E34 ///M5 touring evo 1995
E46 ///M3 convertible 2005


from M88 to S54: only ///M straight six !

Well, the euro M635csi like the Euro M5 had a slightly different engine, 286 vs 256 HP.

Europeans got the better headers and compression, but possibly single thickness timing chain, no?

Also, lighter cars, less weatherproofing, and more likely to rust in the fenders....that's my vague recollection. I had a M6 for a while......nice Luxo cruiser.

It WAS an M powered engine car. But it was built before Motorsport division built the entire car. Motorsport only built the motors back in the mid 80's. The motor was a direct descendant of the M1 racing motor. The M635 was introduced in 1984 at the Frankfurt Auto show.

The Euro version did have the higher compression, tubular stainless steel headers, and the single row cam chain and cam chain tensioners, more aggressive ECU computer mapping. It had no smog equipment whatsoever, not even EGR. The European market emphasised lighter weight and performance over luxury. The Euro M635 tipped the scales at 3300 lbs (that is what my Euro M635 weighed at the port prior to DOT/EPA cert). Each Euro car was custom specified by its potential buyer before build, and many came equipped only with manual sport seats. These cars also had the water buffalo hide option which was never offered in US cars. I have had no rust on either of the Euro M635s I have owned, but they are CA cars and do not see salt on the roads during winter.

The 1988/89 US version M6 had lower compression, cats, heavy square bumpers, back seat airconditioning, and power/motorized seats. They did only have 256 HP and weighed over 3600 lbs. They were equipped by BMW NA who optioned all the luxury choices for the car. The piston rings and dual row cam chain improved reliability, but at the expense of HP.
