E60 M5 transmission Fault

Hi folks,

Ive had the M5 for 7 months now and it hasn't missed a beat.
Just recently, Ii has however popped up a message about a transmission fault, twice.
Both times I was parking it and after an engine restart, the error message is gone. Doesn't seem to have changed the vehicle and there is no shortage of power, and gearbox seems to operate as normal.
I am hesitant to take it the stealer, but reckon the best next step would be to obtain a code reader so I can examine detail of the fault.
I am familiar with engine management systems for Chevy motors, but not sure how it works for BMWs.
Can anyone recommend some software, where I would acquire it, and advise what cable I need ?

Thanks in advance !

hewey.

It's not the speed that kills you.
Its the inability to stop before you hit the wall.

turned out it was a failing clutch !
died on me after a bit of sideways action a few weeks back.
Solution:
New Clutch
New Fly wheel
New Clutch release bearing
And it's all good now, and much smoother on take off.
Attached a picture of the old clutch and flywheel....yep, needed replacing !
