Alpina B5 front tension) strut change - wheel position in wheel arch has changed

Hi all.

This is a weird one that is getting me down and I'm hoping someone can assist. I've had a steering wheel tremor whilst braking at higher speeds. I did not suspect the discs or pads as they were virtually new when the car was purchased last November (18) and that job was undertaken by trusted professionals. I've just had some new tension struts fitted which were genuine articles and bought from a BMW main dealer. The part nos are 31122405862. Now they are fitted the front wheels have moved forward enough that it was plainly different from when I took the car in to have the new ones fitted; one can see the wheels are sitting further forward within the wheel-arch just comparing it now to previous pictures of the car. I would estimate that they have only moved forward approx +/- 5mm but its plainly discernable. When I ordered the struts the main dealer took the details that it was an Alpina B5 plus the chassis number. Unless the part number is incorrect I cannot fathom why the geometry would change so. This is driving me nuts as the car doesn't look "just right" as it did before the change. Can anybody give me some advice? especially about the part no's.

Hi Dale,

I've always been advised to check the geometry after a suspension component change - you never know if it was adjusted last time to compensate for a worn bush or balljoint or different spring seat etc.

In the case of the font struts, they are pretty straightforward to replace. Do you know if the top mount has an offset? If so, was it put back in a different position that might account for a change in geometry?

Hi Dave, and thanks for your reply.

Appreciate your help and suggestions but it now seems it was nothing as complicated as that. After some investigations it seems the BMW dealer supplied me with incorrect tension arms! they were for an E92 3 series!! (they're a few mm shorter). Bit of a pain to get them changed 'again' and I'm hoping the supplying dealer will change them as a goodwill gesture as their error has caused me expense and inconvenience. I'm glad I spotted it and that's all it was..
