Today out of the blue, I started getting failures while driving back home.
First it was ABS failure, then came Servotronic, SMG, Active Restraint and a bunch of others.

The car was bucking like a bronco going in and out of gear like 1-2-N-1-2-N. Revs going up and down.
Limp mode also kicked in and eventually within about 3/4 of a mile the car turned itself off and it would not turn back on.
Called AAA.
In the meantime, I plugged my radar detector in which shows voltage and it showed 10.6V usually with the car off it's about 12.3-12.5
When AAA showed up, they jumped the car and I drove it home about 2 miles away and plugged it into my charger.
It showed 45% charge and 12.3V.
I left it charging for about 3 hours at 20A and it's now at 92%.
WTH is going on?
Also, the a sweet smell of urine in the engine compartment. Could all the bucking have caused some fluid to leak?

Thx

First check that your alternator is working properly. Use secret menu or multimeter to check what is output voltage. How old is your battery?

Battery is about 2-3 yrs old, btw, I had the same thing happen in my brand new 335xi back in 2009. NO warning lights or anything until it just died in the middle of the busiest intersection at rush hour. That was a bad alternator.

My vote goes to the alternator. Did you managed to measure alternator output voltage?

plus if you smell something sweet in your engine compartment then it is most likely the coolant leak somewhere
given this information, coolant leak has begun that damaged your alternator to develop electrical issues due to inconsistent power supply to the modules, and thus Christmas tree of malfunction

My Escort Redline shows 13.1-14.1 during car operation

This seems legit for 80+ degrees fahrenheit. In the winter it goes up to 15.1 when the temps are freezing or lower.

The leak happened after the xmas lights

My suspicion is that the severe bucking caused something to leak. Today there was no smell.

p.s. I am going to stop at the auto part store to have them test the battery, they have some great equipment for that.

Did you check if you had any charging fault, etc. codes with ISTA? I would check all battery cable connections that those are thight. Maybe your problem is intermittent. So now car works fine?
