X Pipe Installation TOMORROW

I am having my X-Pipe installed on my Beast tomorrow. I already have the Dinan exhaust...

My question regards installation. What's the approximate install time I should expect. The shop I am using, Autobahn in Stamford guesstimates about 4 hours total.

For those with this same combo, anything I should tell the tech to watch for? My X-Pipe did not come with any instructions, and an e-mail to Supersprint has not yet been replied to.

Any advice, things to watch out for, etc. Thanks everybody.

My X-pipe connected to Dinan mufflers in about 2 hours. Clamped on nicely. It will sound wild for a week, then tone down. I love it.
Have fun. You will drive a little crazier because now you sound sooo bad. Enjoy

1 Hour

I had my X-pipe installed with the stock mufflers and they clamped it. No welding required. $65. Fit perfect. Midas Muffler

The muffler shop will cut the existing pipes at the correct locations by holding up the x pipe and marking the existing pipes with a pen.

They have a method of expanding the ends of the pipes to slide right over the mating pipe at the end by the muffler. The end by the Cats has a clamp built in. Clamping it also allows you to put it back to stock in the future with less work.

Mine took 45 minutes and that was welded to the OEM mufflers. Cost waxs $65. Easy mod.

Anyway, the sage continues...

I took my car last Friday to Autobahn Auto in Stamford, CT. After about 4 hours, the moron calls and tells me they cant work on my car because they will need to remove the entire exhaust and do arc welding.

I point to my research from BMWM5.com and tell him it can simply be clamped on. Frank Hill, the owner of Autobahn tells me not to believe everything I read online...I told him to go to hell, took my keys and left. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS FOOL.

So now I have an X-Pipe and its driving me nuts. I will try having it done at Midas as some of you have done. Its my understanding that the end by my Dinan exhaust can be clamped on...What about the other end, near the CATs? Does that get clamped on as well?

The X-Pipe has two ends; one the pipes are closer than the other. Which side goes where? Please, I need help before I take my Beast into Midas tomorrow...

BTW, if Midas is unsuccessful, I have an appointment on Monday the 6th at Only BMW in Bedford Hills, NY.

Please, and more advice or things to look for. This whole process has been a nightmare!

Jason,

The x-pipe should have built in clamp on both side. The shop should cut the stock pipe after the O2 Sensors and slip the x-pipe on and clamp it. On the other end, if Dinan exhausts could slip on to the x-pipe then it would be easy. If not you may have to use the clamps Dinan provides. I hear that clamps are not re-usuable. You may want to check the condition of the clamps.

Good luck.

its pretty easy

Jason,

I dont trust anyone that is having a hard time even figuring out how to install the pipe (not directed at you though because the shop should be able to figure it out). If midas can do it, how can some other shop not do it?

Tip: when they take off the OEM piping make sure they file down the ends to prevent a back up in the system from blockage. The place that i went to didnt until i asked them to. The just took off the piping and left the end connected to the cats all frapped with melted pipe and didnt clean it with a file. Ask them to do it!

I find it interesting that the shop did not want to clamp for some reason. Very strange as clamping would be easier then welding the system. I can beleive what they say about welding, as I am sure many shops take precautinary steps when it comes to flames/sparks/heat above the employees head and or near the gas tanks. Install time varies with every installation. You never know what you will run into when installing an aftermarket part. Our shop has done about three x-pipe installations I beleive and every time something different needed to be done to make them fit properly with no leaks and finished to the owner's satisfaction. If you are willing to drive to Massachusetts, we can install your x-pipe while you watch. All this aggravation will pay off though, as you will love the deepened sound of the exhaust:thumbsup: !

Last resort, drive to New Jersey.........

There is an authorized DINAN dealer, MOTOR WORKS WEST, located in Wyckoff, NJ. They work on M5 cars all the time and can do what you need done in a flash and do it blind folded. Seriously they are very good and know exactly what you need to attach the X-PIPE on your beast. Good luck.
