Figured before I can provide any meaningful posts - I need an M5 first. This forum has been a great research tool to help me determine this is the perfect car for me.

I am in search of:

2001-2003 E39 BMW M5.

Looking for the following aside from the standard options:
- Imola Red or Lemans/Avus Blue preferred
- All black interior preferred
- Through loading system aka fold down rear seats

In general, looking for the following:
- Very little corrosion (non-winter driven if possible)
- Car with documented maintenance record preferred
- Lower than 150k desired, but higher may be fine with good maintenance records
- Stock car preferred, but mods would be fine

If the car has any current mechanical issues - not a problem from my side. Just need to know what so I can plan to fix them. Will entertain salvage titles, but will need to know all past history.

Willing to travel to find the right one. I live close to Windsor and travel to the US often. I suspect I may need to go stateside, but thought I would check here first.

I am in no rush to buy - looking for a good summer driver for next year.

If anyone has one for sale or knows where one is for sale - please let me know @ svtforme at gmail.com

Thanks!

I assume that is your WTB on Kijiji. Good luck they are hard to get. Going to the states is an option but they are not as optioned up as the CAN cars. The other thing you need to remember is our dollar sucks right now. It will cost you 1.25can for every yankee buck.
The cars that came to canada were trying to hit a target price of $100k, Can dollar was weak then also. Can cars will have PDC, split seats, shades just to name a few. The only thing I ever use of all the extras is the split fold down seats, all cars should have then.

There are two red ones around one in TO and one near Montl. The Montl is a salvage title that floated around TO a few years ago, guy is asking more for it than he paid for it. The TO one should be in much better shape for a car with that few miles. It is a fixer upper, priced fair. I looked at it but decided against it. I am not looking for blue or red ones so if I get a call on one I will post back here.
There is a beautiful one in Etobicoke it is 33k but only has 34k on the clock it is either black or grey and I forget the year.

That would be me. Found a couple of leads on cars through there, but nothing I was really interested in. I did not know that Canadian cars were more optioned out. The exchange rate is definitely on the rise and makes the US side cars less desirable because of the price increase to us Canadians.

Car in Montreal has a Caramel interior which was less than desirable for me. The one in Toronto did how lower miles but looked like it may have been neglected for much of it's life as you mentioned. It also had a red interior which I am trying to avoid. The blue interior is growing on me though.

There was a blue and black one on kijiji from the same dealer on there for the longest time but they have both since disappeared. I debated going to take a look at them but never ended up making it up. Would be nice to get one from an enthusiast rather than a dealer.

If you do happen to hear of one for sale in ON on anywhere out towards the east that you don't end up going after (I grew up out in your neck of the woods) by all means send me an email.

I am not in the east anymore just to lazy to change my profile. I am East of TO an hour or so. There are no BMWs out East. I have made the trip many times and after you clear Que. you see none. Once you get on the island they don't exist. To bad because the island is perfect for these cars as speed limits appear not to be enforced except near towns. Roads are a bit hard on them.

That red one in TO might be a bargain for a handy guy. Most of what I saw you will have to do to most cars. It was also suggested 11K might take it.
BTW the black one in Sarnia was a members car and although it has high miles it is a good car. I am buying them for some friends in Brazil and they want specific miles or I would buy that one.

If you read the PO posts you can tell he loved the car and spared not expense and attention to detail was high.

I assume the red one you are taking about is the 2001 with the black wheels. How was the paint on the car? It is hard to tell from the pictures. I don't mind having to fix anything really as I will do it myself. I just don't want to have to start repainting everything.

The Sarnia one has been up for a while now. I may have considered if it were blue or red.

Hi, I am now looking as well. I am in Ottawa and my offer of 10k was denied on that red one with the red seats in TO. I have not seen it yet but didn't want to drive down without discussing my budget first. I can ad a bit more cash but would am finding it hard to communicate with the owner.

If you can tell me anything I should know about the car that would be great. It looks faded in the pictures and no idea how it runs or what it needs.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have been communicating with the owner of the red one with tan interior in MTL but he won't budge on 12,500 and now I learn it needs cat and o2 replaced. Not looking to spend that much on a salvage car.

Should I be scared of the one in Sarnia? I would love one that is near perfect like that but the milleage is really high.

I recently sold my 2002 Imola Red 540 /6///m pack and am filled with regret so I would like to upgrade.
Thanks guys, I look forward to buying one and contributing to this forum.

I am unable to send PM's. Sailor24, could you please tell me who the PO was for the one in Sarnia? I would like to familiarize myself on the car by reading posts or contacting him. Thank you!

Not sure what SVTforme paid for his (good job btw, saw the pics), but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a m5 here in the $10-12.5k CAD range that isn't going to be either very high milage or a piece of crap. I know nothing about that Sarnia one but it's been posted there for a while, maybe you can talk them down a bit? I found mine in August and haven't really seen anything similar since except for the 30k+ one that was posted in Richmond hill. Starting to think I got lucky.

Thanks for the feedback. Truth is, I was looking to spend $7000 on another decent bmw of any sort. I have since been poisoned for the need to feel the way I felt in my 540......only better. The car defines the budget in my case. I would rather buy a $6500 M5 with obvious issues than to buy a $16,000 one that doesn't need anything the day I buy it. Almost bought it too!

Honestly, I am looking to spend up to $15,000 on a decent car and I hope to find it from an older, active member of this forum. Isn't that what we all want? lol. The one in Sarnia is officially sold. Ad went down today and dealer confirmed. I wanted to see posts about it and get a feel for it, I would have pulled the trigger on 276,xxxkm for 13k and taken the **** from people around me but I would have potentially been confident in the car.

You definitely get what you pay for. I have been looking for close to 4 months and it is hard to find something that is genuinely nice. There are lots to chose from our there in the US, but Canada can get tricky. You also have to contend with rust up here too. Watch out for the rear of the rear of the wheel arches, two spots on the body at the base of the trunklid and jacking points. Bring a magnet with you!!

Add to that you now also have US buyers coming across the border with the exchange rate engine what it is (15k CDN = 12k US right now). Prices seem to be going up with the nice weather coming.

I would say 15k is a reasonable budget, but you still may have to do some fix it items. It will be hard to find a 2001+ for under this with under 160k km and well cared for. Seems high I know - but the fix-up costs add up quick (keys cost $250 alone FYI). For under 15k, you may have to search for a 2000. If you want cheaper than that you will have to move very fast once something cames up. There was a 2003 $6500 one in Cambridge back in Nov and trust me you won't want to see what that gets you! I made out really well as I bought on the coldest day of the year and came in with an offer at the ideal time when the owner had it off the market for the winter and I kept in touch. Car has some issues that I can fix but may have turned some people away (clutch slips like crazy etc).

If you find one - pull a Ontario used vehicle report for $20 at the ministry (this would have helped with the Sarnia one) and call the owners if you can find them (google and 411.ca are great for this). I called the previous owners on mine and learned everything I ever wanted to know about the car and then some. The previous owner owned the car for 8 years and only pushed the Sport button under a dozen times as he was scared of it. I pressed it that many times on my way home hiha.

From what I have read, there were just under 700 E39 M5's sold in Canada - good luck in finding one of them. If I see anything on kijiji or Autotrader I will let you now through here.

Here is some inspiration for you. This is how my car looked on day 1 after passing the Driveclean test finally last week before going into winter hibernation (had to update software at Canadian Tire to get it to read). Needs a good cleaning as it has been sitting for a while.. but will clean up very nice. 100% original not a single mod. Bring on the nice weather!!

Nice buy!! I've been on a "passive" hunt for an e39. Not many listed on kijiji, Craigslist, forums or any Google searches that I can find. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

The only advice i can give is for you to post an ad that you are looking. Mine found me.

And when you go for a test drive, beat on it so you can see if clutch slips. Fast shifts with TC off will show you if it does. Good luck.
