2000 bmw m5

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking on this forum, and want to buy my first E39. The above car is located fairly close to me. I am looking for some feedback from the wealth of knowledge available on this site:

The car has 140,000 miles with 60,000 on a new motor. Asking price is $15,000. KBB states that a fair price for this car in Excellent condition is $10,500.

What do you guys think? Thanks for your feedback.

What year, what condition, service records? Need a little more info to give an idea on pricing

interior 9/10 wear on steering wheel and shift knob. seats are gorgeous condition matching 2 ton red/black + carbon fiber upgrade.
engine and trans 10/10
new plugs ngk factory torqued 22nm.
recent oil change 7L liqui molly 10w60
belt replaced
new air filters.
8 ITB Cleaning.
2 thermostat sensors replaced.
new radiator
new fan clutch and blade
new expansion tank
new clutch flywheel pressure plate
new o2 sensors

Upgrades
Android DVD navigation system with back up camera + factory parking sensors
2003 m5 front headlights with CCFL Halo White
2003 m5 LED taillights and LCM 4 module to eliminate codes.
ECU tuned from 6500 rpm to 7200rpm cut off
Removed Speed governor from 155mph to 225 mph
E60 M5 Wheels With Adaptors to fit on E39 74mm Hub Brand new tires on the rear and front is 60%
Straight Pipe Open exhaust with magna flow performance catalytic convertor. ( codes still present illuminates check engine light )
Trailer hidden hitch ( ORDERED FROM EUROPE ORIGINAL BMW MADE FOR M5 )"


150,000 miles with 60,000 on the second motor. Once I found out about this, I shied away.

It's hard to say whats it worth. I would go see it and take it for a test drive. Talk with the seller. Prices are all over the place for these cars depending on location and seller. I bought mine for $8000 6 months ago, 2002 with 152k miles. It needed some help but ran good and looked decent besides the lousy buffing job.

I agree that prices are all over the map, but I happen to have one for sale (mine!).
It's a 1997 E39 540i with 163k miles. Arctic Silver/black leather. It's in really great condition but not mint. All work was done by a 10-year BMW team leader in the Manhattan dealership who opened up his own BMW shop. I was planning on selling it for $3k, but now I am getting emails from people telling me I am too low. I will cry when we part, but if it goes to a good home, I'll be happy. Interesting to see what people here think about the KBB values... I disagree with the KBB on this.

If using KBB values is a buying strategy, that will either help you or make the seller no want to deal with you, I've been on both sides.

But the deal doesn't seem that great, there are so many E39 M5's under $15k with 100-150k miles. I have one for sale myself.

KBB is a useful starting point, but it's not the end-all answer. I just sold an Acura TL. KBB indicated $7k for the mileage, but I was seeing similar cars going for $10k on forums. KBB didn't price in the timing belt replace, new tires, the rarity of the manual, and the Type-S package very well. Sold it for well above KBB to someone who had looked for that car, with the MT, for a long time. He could wrench on it, so I felt good giving him a deal, and he made it easy for me to sell it to him (wasn't a PITA). Given that the e39 M5 is similar in many regards (rare sub-model of a somewhat common, but older car, enthusiast drive, maintenance intensive)... I would only use KBB as a starting point. And it's also probably the floor of your pricing. Do a search on forums, online sales sites, and then put up what you think is a good price. Potential bidders will let you know what they think it's worth.

If I look up 2000 M5 with 108k, then I overpayed for my m5 by a lot. What it doesn't know is that I was able to talk with 3 of the 4 owners, one of the owners maintained it for 10 years (owns shop), and he could tell me exactly what had been done, when and what needed to done. The other guys were helpful in filling in blanks. And it's a Dinan S2.

Seller descriptions tell me a lot about a car. When they assure you that it's in great condition, pulls, has no problems, etc., there either were recent problems that were just fixed, or it has problems that keep coming back. I don't like the tone of the description, but that's just my opinion.

The thing to be aware of is that E39 M5s are consistently underpriced by KBB. A well kept one will easily fetch much more than KBB says because enthusaists know how much the cars are worth. I'm certainly not an expert on purchasing but I figured I would throw in that little tidbit.
