Hello Gentlemen:

I am working on the car this weekend (1992 jap spec e34m5)
tasks planned are:
valve clearances
idle control valve,vacuum hose re/re
timing chain tensioner upgrade
secondary air pump bypass (unplug and new belt)
door handle gaskets
headliner re/re

I have a question regarding measuring the valve clearance ,does the piston have to be at TDC, or is it enough that the valve is closed.
To fit the tensioner do I need to remove the thermostat housing and if so does part #2 (11531312287) gasket ring need to be replaced.

Thanks
john

Hi John

It is when the valve is closed and the lobe is pointing up. Use a spreadsheet for keeping a note of the gap.

I didn't remove the thermostat housing when doing mine, but I have changed the thermostat at a later time. I changed the gasket ring when doing so, but it was damn tricky getting the old ring out and the new one is a press fit installation. I would definitely not change it unless it is damaged.

I am about to start work on my car too. Complete suspension rebuild (EDC removal with Konis/HR springs) and most bushings and steering components. I will also have to do the valve adjustment. Does anyone have a link to a nicely done writeup on how to do this? Or even on how to check and know if yuo need one? How would I know if it needs valve adjusting at all?

I recently bought the car and have waited mostly for koni inserts but they are finally arriving this monday. Eager to start work any time now. First take everything apart, inspect then replace if needed. Should be fun and hopefully not too costly.

What oil viscosity are these engines running?

valve clearances were all within spec. good news
idle control valve replaced. was experiencing some strange behavior where the throttle would wind up while in neutral so maybe its a fix.
unplugged relay for secondary air pump, it is still a belt tensioner, but just freewheels. nice change as air pump was noisy
headliner, sunroof cover, parcel shelf,a,b,c pillars off to the trimmer
timing tensioner upgrade was simple to perform not certain of the results as there is a bit of timing chain whine not sure if its normal or not.
new plugs.
took out both rear stuts looking for a squeak that was driving me crazy. turned out to be parking brake pads rubbing on the dust shield.
replaced engine mounts the old ones had burst. this is a nice upgrade and an easy job the car is definitely tighter.

Discovery: the universal joint is showing some heavy tearing, so planning to do this and center mount in the near future then we are ready for spring/summer.
