I've had my E60 M5 (2006) for about a month now. A couple days ago I was driving it in the rain---first time since I've owned the car. While driving I hit the windshiled wipers and made a nasty sound, you know when you use the wipers and theres no water? It made that exact sound. I just took it as the wipers needing more water but that was not the case. It was pouring and the wipers continued to make that nasty sound. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

Why not buy the new Rain-X foam that is a cleaner and the water repellent
in one. This will improve wet weather visibility immensely. You can literally drive +90mph
without using the wiper blades.

First time I've had a set of wipers go out on me!

No it isn't. Wipers deteriorate with heat. You just don't use them often enough to tell fresh wipers from old wipers. Being in Seattle, I am hyper sensitive to my wiper condition. Don't confuse my envy of your situation with anything else. It's a good thing to not have that piece of knowledge.
