Hi there,

Curious if anyone might be able to help with the following. E60M5 6 speed manual. Have noticed recently that there is a subtle whining noise coming from the car I cannot pinpoint, it gets slightly louder/higher pitched with higher speed, but does not change based on engine RPM.

My first thought was maybe gearbox or diff related given the fact that it changed with speed, but someone mentioned it sounded sort of like an alternator noise. 07 with 98k miles. Planning to take it in for an oil change anyway, but any ideas before I'm at the mercy of the BMW techs would be much appreciated!

Thank you

I have the same and it is diff related: I had the diff flushed twice in a year and it’s better. Indy says it’s mechanical (flanges?), no danger but can only be totally solved by replacing parts for a non négligeable fee so it stays as is for now.

Yes differential sound sometimes is hard to even pinpoint front or rear , left or right. And there is already a service bulliten about the read diff fluid needing an additive.

As an update, definitely sounds like it's coming from the Diff. Went to BMW, but the receptionist scheduled my appointment in the past (it's amazing how that works) so will have to wait. Will start looking for an independent BMW specialist to change the diff fluid and hope that does it.

Any thoughts on how bad driving it might be? Should I not? Or maybe just drive more slowly?

It is not an issue, an annoyance at most so you can feel free to drive it hard. That is what I was told by my M cars official Indy specialist (who preps the cars and also races them on track). As he is recommended and trusted by he BMW dealer, I do too.
