Hi all,
I did a long search, but didn't find a clear answer. Did the VANOS problems only affect 06-07 models, or do the LCI models also have problems? Is it still considered an expensive fix, or has the cost narrowed to just the solenoids instead of the pump?

I have an 08 with 72k miles and no VANOS problems yet. The car is almost out of warranty, and I'm deciding if an extended warranty makes sense?

Thanks!

The Late 2007 and 2008+ cars seem to have "fewer" issues, but they are still failing. The engines just seem to last longer ~ which is a plus.

Below is a list of the 2008 engines we have replaced due to failure

06/07 2007 m6 Vert, 54k miles, vanos pump failure
2008 m5 49k miles, vanos pump
2008 m5 33k miles, hydrolocked from taking in water
2008 m5, 72k miles, spun bearing
2008 m5, 69k miles, spun bearing
2008 m6, 102k miles, spun bearing
2008 m5, 142k miles, spun bearing
2008 m5, 137k miles, spun bearing & failed vanos pump due to spun bearing
2008 m6, 84k miles, spun bearing

the average of spun bearing failures on the early motors is 59k miles. this is much higher than that.

if you are gonna keep the car. buy a warranty :noSMG:

Good to know. Is there any preventative maintenance possible to eliminate the risk? Or a recall?

thanks for the detailed info. That's really helpful.

Check the service bulletins listed in a thread in this forum. I believe the cutoff date for the new internal Vanos line is build date 12/5. There is also a bulletin detailing which early cars have the new vanos pump. You have to wade through the service bulletins a bit.
