Since there is no room for a spare tire in the trunk, what does everyone do to prevent getting stranded?

I was thinking of storing a couople of cans of fix-a-flat in the trunk.

What do you think?

A couple of cans? All that extra weight will guarantee a blowout of your rears at the same time :D

The cars came with what's called an "M-mobility kit" which is a temporary solution to a blowout as long as it's not a big one. However, there's a space saver offering from one of our sponsors, I believe. Check out the sponsors forum and do a search in there.

Also, you see that emergency number in your trunk lid? That's lifetime for tire emergencies, if I'm not mistaken.

I use the M Mobility system, which should already be in your trunk. That, a cell phone, AAA membership, and a credit card.

It has also been said that BMW roadside assistance will provide free towing to a BMW center for any M car that has a flat, but I have not had any experience with that. Others may have, however.

the M5 came with runflat tires (at least my 03' did) . I replaced them with regular continentals. I figure with the air pump that comes with the car and a store bought plug kit, I should be o.k. It is not recommended but in an emergency you can even plug a screw/nail in a sidewall to get you to the nearest repair facility.

Well, the last time I got a flat out in the wild, I ended up using the lifetime free towing number on the trunk lid and then proceeded to drop about a grand on a new set of rear tires.... yeaaaaahhhh..... enjoyed the hell out of that....

i bought a front wheel from a board member and take it along when ever i go on a trip w/ my aluminum jack. it takes up most of the trunk, but the piece of mind is worth it.

BTW, pictured is my mini jack since the beer took up the space for my full size jack.

I bought the E60 spare tire kit from Tischer BMW for my E92 and when I got rid of that I kept it (the kit) only to find that it wouldn't clear the brakes on the F10 so I sold the wheel & tire but kept the jack and lug wrench and Styrofoam insert and bought a wheel and tire off of Tire Rack. HUGE sucker; 275/35-18 I think. Plus the TPMS sensor (which the Tischer kit did not include) I think the wheel & tire cost me about $350.

I'll check to see if it fits the E39 one of these days. Right now, I carry around a Slime kit with compressor and bottle of Slime.

I'm still pissed at BMW for selling all of their new cars with run-flats and I think all but the 7 no longer have any spare at all.

If you got the flat close to home and had BMW tow it to the nearest dealer, could you in theory order a tire from Tire Rack and have it shipped to your home, then tow the M5 to a tire shop and have it installed there?

:eek:h:

this isn't the freaking 1800s where you could be 1000 miles from the nearest human...worse case scenario you'll never be more than 107 miles from a phone and food A McDonald's Is Never More Than 107 Miles Away :D

but that wheel and jack will most certainly make sure anything you run over pierces the tires :viking:

as for BMW lifetime tow it's always to a BMW dealership :crying:

*also what's all that beer for? changing a tire with a full size jack can't be that stressful?

I have 2 sets of extra wheels and tires in addition to what is on the car. In everyday driving, I leave them at home. If I go on a road trip, I will stick one of the fronts in the trunk just in case. For tools, I bought the OEM 17mm wrench and popped it in the tool kit. I also bought an e39 jack and store that next to the M Mobility stuff in the trunk. Fits and works great.

front wheel/tire in the trunk with a jack, lug wrench and OE length bolts. (cause I run rears and 3mm spacers in front)

I'd love to carry a spare, jack, and tools for dealing with it, but no way I could fit that in with the family's luggage. With a wife & daughter you get about twice what you need. My son and I do pretty well and keep it light.

man BMW updated the E39 accessories offerings to the point where it becomes an event just to change a tire or wait for roadside assistance

You obviously don't drive an M5 in Alaska...
A flat in Valdez puts me over 300 miles from a shop that can handle a low profile tire. :crying: And 270 miles from a McDonalds. ;)
And if I'm out on the highway somewhere, there is a really good chance a cell phone won't work either.
And I'm really curious if the 'lifetime emergency' phone number is really still valid or not.
I wonder if they'll tow me 750 miles back to Anchorage if I get a flat in Whitehorse?

Yeah, I live in the sticks. And I can see Russia from my front porch while I BBQ with Sarah. :grinyes:

I have the air compressor from the M mobility kit, two big cans of Fix-A-Flat, a BlackJack tire-plug kit, and a BMW jack kit (part #71106773536).
I'm planning on buying the space saver spare from Bimmerzone, but haven't spent the money on it yet.
