Hi all,
I dont know if you remember the thread I started
But I finally got the time to test drive an '01 with 36,000 mi

IMPRESSIONS:

I wasn't going to buy this one because it had some front end damage so it didn't bother me that the idiot dealer was getting on it really hard right after he startrd it.

My turn to drive: I notice that it isn't very warm so I just put around to see how she feels on the road, Feels great, get onto the freeweay and start hitting the little humps that divide the lanes to see how much feedback I get, good, expansion joints, a little numb but I can still get a sensation through the wheel.

I get off the freeway and go into a halfway developed neighborhood and start tossing her around, weighty but not unbalanced or detatched feeling!

So we exit the neighborhood and I want to see what the engine is like,
1st gear really strong, 2nd gear chirp and strong, 3rd gear seems gutless so I figure I will stay in that gear until near redline and go into fourth, all of the sudden CLUNK!! and I just feel that the pedal has no effect on the car anymore so I tell the guy "I think it's in limp mode" CEL is on and we putt back to the dealership and he says "So when we get her fixed up you want me to call you" I say no, I will waith until you have one that I know doesn't have any problems.

So that was my experience with the M5, does it turn me off...Not really
I just was wondering what you guys think may have happened and if it is a common occurance.

BTW here is the car so you all know to stay away from it

basically, I drove one a few years ago and it had a BAD clutch so that was my first impression:sad1:
Sure sounds like dead MAFs in this sample.

Too bad.

Other than being priced $10k high....

Wonder if they'll fix it good and proper? or just get it to pass the next sucker to test drive it...
Did you ever have a chance to get the vin# prior to test drive to check the history? I wonder if that would show any signs?

they had a carfax and it came back clean
It was a small amount of damage (Not really noticable if you don't know what you are looking at.

My buddy (The salesman) said "We can probably let her go for around $45K"
I wasn't there to buy, just to break an M5:M5launch:
If you get serious on a car you should try to run the VIN for BMWs records- screw carfax, it's semi-useless- BMW service history will list any warranty claims with mafs, etc

Yeah, I will do that when I find one I really want, that's what I did with my M3
Not a great introduction to an M5; I hope you are able to test a good one next.

Good luck!
I to went driving a few not-too-perfect M5s before I went to Germany to buy a really good one. Don´t let the difficulty of the chase for a perfect M5 turn you off. It will be worth waiting for!

I would suggest buing from a one-owner Person who loves BMW's, and has all the records and tells you on your test drive not to take it past the lights on the tach.

If you buy from a dealer the chances of getting a pampered car go out the window. It can be done but your odds go way down.

This way you can question and really get a feel for the person who has owned it since it's inception...
my o2.

Hello Ard,
How do you do this? Will a BMW dealership run this history for someone?
Thanks!
Yes, with the VIN#, any dealership can pull and print you the full service history of the car. Regular maintenance items such as oil changes I don't believe are listed, but all warranty and non-warranty work is. There are codes associated with each service/repair item. There is a decodeing sheet floating around on the internet that will allow you to look them up like the service advisor does. I have the code sheet in Microsoft XL if you want me to email it to you, send me a PM.

Thank you! I'll PM you for the sheet so I have it for reference.

So I went and drove this one today, cluth feels good nice firm susspesion so I cruise around and let her come up to temp., I get on the on ramp to see how she does and THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED! How much are maf sensors as if I get one it seems like I will need to have these on hand.

Is this just a freak coincidence? grrrrrrr
At least the engine sounded better than the other one.

I wonder if the SES light and limp modes are related to recent driving styles. My car definately performs better if I run it moderately hard for a while before really stomping on it. I've gotten the SES light on the street after poking around in town and then punching it. On track I've wamed up a session and then run hard all day long without SES lights.
I dunno.... but he ain't taking my car out for a drive!
