Video review: I test the BMW M DKG Drivelogic in the new BMW M3 Coupe E92.

Part I below:



It is difficult to describe the feeling of the M DKG (Doppel Kuppling Getriebe, M Double Clutch gearbox), the best way of experienceing it is through of course drive it but also be a passenger in the car.

First as a passenger you notice how smooth the shifts where in automode. Or that is, you really didn't notice the shifts since they where so smooth. Default start program is D2, which is the "second smoothest" shift program in automatic mode. I say second smoothest instead of second slowest since the shifts apparantly in either autmatic of manual mode regardless of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 takes the same amount of time, they are all as fast. The noticable shifts in the upper programs (4,5 and 6) are for the drivers who want feedback; there is actually a new gear engaged.

The only hint of that a new gear has been selected when are the sound and the movement of the RPM-meter is my opinion. The whole process seems so smooth and refined compared to a SMGIII that has in most ways the "headsnap effect" when shifting gears. Also, just the feeling of the shift process itself is that is it is indeed faster than SMGIII but without the "bang".

Since it is a "double clutch" the gears are always engaged and you would think that you would not notice the changes of gears between the already fast SMGIII singlee clutch gearbox and the DKG but you actually are: the shifts are not only more refined and smooth they do feel faster. Not alot, but if you would make the decision it is DKG and that is a new evolution in driving cars.

Best way is to test it!

Also, another note: you never have to change the double clutch: it apparantly lasts forever.

Great video Gustav, so the gear is always engaged so I guess there will be no rev matching when you down shift like SMG3 am I correct?

When it came out, there was a review of the DSG by Evo I believe which concluded that "It was too perfect". While this sounds nonsense from efficiency and engineering perspectives, from driver satisfaction and enjoyment perspectives, they may have a point which probably applies to DKG as well.

Thanks Gustav, for taking the time to make the very informative clip and sharing with us. Can we simply say that it feels like an automatic gearbox though obviously is shifting much faster?

No. Revmatching is certainl ythere if you want it, esp. in the "Faster" settings. If you depress the gaspedal while downshifting it is alot louder revmatching.

In S1, S2 and D1 etc it feels like an automatic or evenmore liek a computergame. But it is so controlled so in the faster settings with soem feedback you just end up lining it since it is such a perfekt feeling with always power to the ground without the slightest delay.

Having driven both, which do you prefer? I have always had MT cars, but with this one, Im leaning towards the DKG to try it out.

I really liked the M3 manual but for some reason the M3 I had was a bit stiff, esp. from 1st to 2nd. But it was not annoying at all having 6-speed, I lived the car alot even with the manual gearbox.

yea, my only complain with the 6 speed was the clutch pedal is wayyyyyyyyy too soft. My E36 cluth pedal is very stiff, and I actually prefer that, and in the e92 m3 the soft clutch really annoyed me.
