I’m doing a rebuild and trying to get the vanos gear and timing done correctly. Before I install the vanos unit I make sure I install my timing tool and it’s in TDC. So whenever I install the vanos unit it pushes back the exhaust cam and gear so it messes up my timing also. Bank 2 seems to be okay only bank 1 I’m having problems with.

Do you think my tension need to be adjusted because the exhaust gear with the 3 hex bolt/washer is not in the center like the one for the intake gear?

You have to release the central bolt to reduce the tension and redo the adjustment as I outlined. The exhaust cam timing tool must rest on the cylinder head. then continue adjusting the gears.

i have bigger problems now. I was trying to release the center bolt and then the exhaust gear broke apart.How do I put it back together?

I have thinking about it by looking at some pictures.
You can try this:
install the out sleeve (in your hand) mesh the gears to the inner sleeve in a way that one of the (screws with washers) points at (timing position 6 o'clock position) with the timing screw M8X18 at the back of the gear points at 12 o'clock position). Install the ring with round hole on the end of the spring then install the lock ring in the groove (just like on the intake gear). The most important after you do this is test it by (compress the outer sleeve with your hand and it should extend back to the timing position, of course all three screws with washers tightened I mention earlier for timing position.

Okay thanks I got put together but need to double check if it’s line up right. May have to play with it for a bit. Does the screws need to be far right of the slots?
