I recently got a pretty bad oil leak between the vanos adjustment unit and mating surface to the head. Appears RTV was applied by the builder but has blown out and now leaks. My question is can the vanos adjustment unit be removed simply by removing the bolts on the front and lifting the valve cover or is there special alignment tools needed? Also is there a DIY or procedure anyone can share?

I haven't tried this, but I'm fairly certain it can be done.

- remove VANOS solenoids (to allow air in so pistons can be moved). Clean them and replace o-rings while out.
- remove valve covers
- remove all 4 bolts from actuator
- replace gasket
- reinstall bolts to actuator. You haven't released anything associated with timing and the swashplates, so it should go back exactly as it came out.
- clean old Drei-bond off of actuator mating surface
- apply new drei-bond per ISTA/TIS
- reinstall valve cover
- reinstall solenoids.

Who the hell uses RTV for that? It's a $14 gasket. Not very professional.

Thanks guys, that TIS link is exactly what was needed. Took about 2h to tear everything down but I managed to get the unit out and now need to order the seal.

Good info in the Drei-bond and not mentioned in the TIS. Guess I need to order that also.
