Valentine One vs. Illinois State Trooper

Driving yesterday south on I-55 toward St. Louis, cruise control pegged at 88 in a 65, I get a single K-band blip from ahead as I crest a hill, then another right away. I'm the lead car of a small cluster of traffic. I tap the brakes to disengage the cruise, move to the right, and start to slow; the blips increase. By the time I get down to 75 it's a constant stream of blips; then it increases to the constant you're-being-clocked screech and I see the state trooper, coming at me in the northbound lane. Check my speed: 66. Good. I watch him as we pass each other, then keep an eye on him in the rearview.

I see his brake lights come on. Crap.

He pulls to the left shoulder and his backup lights come on. CRAP.

I continue at 65, dividing my attention between driving and rearview. He crosses the median and starts accelerating south. I'm too far ahead of him for him to see what I'm doing, so I take down the V1 just in case, put it in the console, and tuck the wire up behind the visor. He is now gaining fast in the left-hand lane. I continue to watch.

His cherry-top lights come on. Crap.

And he pulls in right behind... the guy two cars back, who had been pacing me for half an hour and didn't slow down as soon as I did. I watch in the rearview as the two of them pull over to the shoulder, breathe a sigh of relief, put the V1 back up, and hit Resume on the cruise as soon as they're out of view. :)

If you're a true road warrior, you can disengage cruise with a quick tap on the clutch pedal, which fails to alert the cars chasing you. If you're lucky, the cop sees other cars going around you and picks off one of them. :viking:

Awesome. In this case, you may have been fine even without the V1.

If you have someone closely following and you're the lead car, it's likely that the cop would still nab the fella behind you. They generally go for the "easy kill" when multiple cars are speeding together, and that's usually the poor guy who was following.

How do I know this? grrrrrrr I've personally seen this happen more than once.

So: I tend not to let my guard down even if I'm not the lead car in a pack unless the lead is significant enough that a trooper would already have his attention on the first guy and be "on the move" before you enter his radar gun's field of view.

Does the K40 tell you how many signals you're receiving and where they're coming from? I've found that feature of the V1 extremely useful.

If I could get a built-in that had the V1's features, I would, because I certainly do NOT like having an obvious box hanging from the windshield. And though I had time to remove it while out of the cop's view on this occasion, you're right that there is not always enough time to do that. (It's not a particularly dangerous thing, though - no more than, say, changing a CD or dialing a cell phone.)

Nice MOVE! Next time I'm following someone and all of a sudden they slow down or move to the right Imma do the same! hehe

dwasifar,

Yes to all questions. My system has an LED (bight red) built into my dash. 4 LEDS, 2 on the right and 2 on the left. Both sides are also equipt with audibles. When the right side goes off, radar from the rear, left, from the front. No side indicators they are useless anyway and lead to too many false alarms. The system is completely invisible to the eye and also jams lasar. I love it.

I had the V1 for a while, and side by side I tested them both. The K 40 was the clear choice IMHO

The guy actually DID do that... just not quickly enough.

There were six or seven cars in the cluster of traffic. I had just gained the lead in the left lane when I got the first blip, and the eventual victim was near the back of the pack, in the left lane and traveling at my speed. Everyone else was on the right. When I moved right, it put me at the head of the line. The victim kept gaining for a few moments longer; by the time he moved right he had become third in line, and the cop was in visual range.

I don't think the victim realized in time that I had picked up a cop, because he had been following me for a while, and seen that I always move to the right if that lane is open (because cops look for speeders more in the left lane). He was doing the same. He probably thought I was just doing it a little sooner than usual.

Rebel - thanks, I will check it out. I may decide to go with K40 in the beast and keep the V1 in my daily driver. How much did it cost you?

MWM, I seen a string of cars in one group pulled over at the same time in a speed trap, where the radar operator wired a roadside officer down the stretch around a bend who pointed to one after the other to pull over.

I've seen that kind of trap a lot on I-55. A cop sits on an overpass taking laser or instant-on, and over the next hill there will be three or four cars pulled over getting tickets.

I wonder what would happen in that instance if you just kept going? The cop doing the pointing would have a tough decision to make - let you go, or chase you and let all the others go in the process.

The problem with a built-in system is the installation. Maybe the M5 (being a 5 series with a longer history and you guys and the shops having more knowledge with the electrical components) is more straightforward, but few dealers have experience installing any options in the Z8.

I seriously wanted to install a radar detector in the Luxobeast, but I was warned by my dealer that their service dept. had little knowledge of the electronics in the Z8. The only radar system they installed (in the Z8) was wired into the hot side of the ignition switch, whereby the system was always on, and could eventually drain the battery, if not manually shut off.

Because of that, I decided not to go for it. I'll definitely get a plug-in system this spring, as it encourages me not to speed but to remind me to drive more alertly, safely, and observantly, yet allows me to occasionly take advantage of the open road and push the throttle.
