Has anyone installed the Valentine 1 remote display in their M5? I would like to have the remote mounted on top of the steering column or somewhere in that vicinity. I already have the V1 mounted on the windshield near the rear view mirror. Any advice on how to neatly wire this up would be greatly appreciated.

You do know that the remote V1 still leaves the unit on the windshield don't you? It only darkens the windshield mounted display and moves the display else where. Why would you want the extra wiring with no real benefit of getting the unit itself off the windshield. I have had a V1 for going on 4 years now and love it. But if really wanted a remote mount I would go with the K40 which mounts the units themselves under the bumper with the display in the cockpit.

Someone I know has the wire running through the side pillars down to the instrument panel. I don't even bother, i like it up direcly above the rear view mirror (slightly to the right of the little bar that holds it on).

My goal is to take the lighted display of the V1 out of view from other cars (and law enforcement) and put the remote display where it's easier to check when things get dicey. I bought the V1 when I got the M5 and I like it enough that I just ordered 3 more (with remote displays).

Bob, there is a pretty trick picture of a Valentine One's display mounted discretly into the rear view mirror of a Mercedes S500 at http://www.ultrasmith.com/sports.htm. I'm not sure where they mounted the actual detector, especially since it detects both front and rear. If mounted outside the cabin (in the bumpers for instance), that would appear to require two detection units wired to the one display. I e-mailed these Ultrasmith guys in NY a while back, and they quoted something like $2700 for the entire installation. Good luck. AD

Bob-

I followed the install instructions in the ideafile link (below),I am very happy with the position. In my opinion the display is best viewed in a "heads up" position vs having to look down at the steering wheel.

I do not believe that it is unlawful in CA to have the V1 in your car???? I may be misinformed though. So who cares if the fuzz see your radar equipment.

Only my opinions.

I just pick up my 2001 M5 at teknicar in NYC what they do is put V1 indicator inside of my rear mirror and wire everything from A pillar all the way through rear deck. It's excellent job. I paid 3200 for this, but it's worth it.

I followed the course of the ideafile person but with a twist. I mounted the V1 on the windshield just to the right of the rearview mirror. In this position it gets both a good forward and rear view. Also, even if the right passenger sunshade is used, it doesn't interfer with the operation of the V1. I bought a crimping tool from radio shack and cut the individual phone cords so that I could slide them under the headliner into the center console where the power connector was. I did the same thing for the remote and wired it to the left A-pillar and down to the dashboard where the remote unit is. I placed the remote unit on the leftmost side of the dash and velcroed it under my toll road transponder (not to the leather dash!).

What this gives me is a V1 that virtually invisible (especially so if you put the passenger side sunshield down) and a remote unit that only I can see.

My next plan is to buy the remote audio unit and order a replacement for the speaker phone grill. I'll drill a hole in the replacement grill and put the remote audio unit through there. That way I can control the power and volume by just reaching up to the roof center console.

I'll try to post pictures in the next few days.

Sorry if this post was long winded.

Why don't any of the posts mention the Escort SR-1? It looks like a great, high performing remote mount detector. What do you guys know that I need to? My M5 should be delivered sometime next summer. Patience is a virtue isn't it?

I'm probably going to have the SR-1 installed next week. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Well, so much for an afternoon project. Reading the book and putting the V1 in took all of about 30 minutes. Guess I have to go out driving for the rest of the afternoon to test this thing out. With the alcantra headliner, the one wire which is visible almost blends in and isn't really that noticeable. I did just as the ideaphile thing said to do and it worked out perfect. http://www.ideaphile.com/bmw/mods/v1/index.html
I gained access with two flat head screwdrivers at the ends of the light unit , careful not to scratch the plastic of the light unit, cottonballs might help. Any Questions just email me.
Thanks to everyone else for the tips.
