Ok its a 00 with the Small Nav screen.

How involved is it to upgrade it to the OEM wide screen
like the 01-03's? Does it require fabrication to the console?
Something that can be done by yourself???

Any of you tried aftermarket Navs??
with stuff like TV, DVD player, rear camera and etc??
If so what did you get?? how much was it??
any kind of insight..

THanks..

this is a very simple upgrade. You will need a new trim piece which is readily available from the dealer. Everything else is plug and play. Take a look at http://www.bimmernav.com This site has very detailed information about the procedure.

btw, a nav computer upgrade is also very straightforward. I did this to my MY2000, and it is a huge improvement to the interface, speed of route calculation, etc.

You are looking at over $4000 from the dealer.

1500 for the Nav widescreen
500 for the control unit it mounts to (the part with the cassette player in it)
2000 for the MKIV nav unit

Lots of MKIVs have sold on Ebay. The prices have gone up recently. They were in the 650-800 range, and now I have been seeing 900-1000.

The widescreens often come up there as well. They are a little riskier buy, as they are fairly prone to fail. Make sure you get some kind of assurance that the seller will follow through if you get a failed screen.

The swap is less than an hour for the MKIV unit. About 1 hour for the Nav screen swap as well.

Both are plug and play upgrades. I did both and would highly recommend it. The DVD nav is much faster than the CD one.

I bought my MKIV about 1 month ago for $560 through ebay. This one came with a 2004.2 map and has the latest firmware which supports Sirius. Be patient, as supply and demand for these products is quite volatile.

I hate navigations and I think it is very ala Reatta specially the ones on the 2000 E39 models. Has any one here ever tried to switch to non navigation dashboard such as the one in the 540 E39's? Does it work? I wish it was an option and not a standard issue.
