I always get a "Tyre Defect" warning after about an hour's driving. I have tried resetting the system via the button, but it doesn't do anything- no message in the display. I've pressed the button several times, held it in, tried with ignition on but engine off, with engine on - all nothing.

All ideas appreciated.

iIRC, the inition needs to be in position 2 when setting the monitor.

To reset it, turn ignition to position two. Push and hold the TPW button. The dash OBC should say 'Set Tyre Pressures' Start eh car and drive off until it disappears, then the pressures have been reset.

Could be a faulty speed sensor as well maybe? Have you had the car plugged in and the fault codes read?

cheers

Thanks for the replies. I've tried holding the button down in position 2, position 1, with the engine on - even tried a tip found on another thread which was to hold down in the button in position 2 and then turn the key to position 1.

No luck at all - no message in the OBC.

The car has just come back from the specialist where all the fault codes were supposed to have been read and sorted. If the speed sensor was faulty would that explain no "Set Tyre Pressures" message?

Did you remove the button to ensure it was properly plugged in?

While doing this check for power. Also, I doubt it, but maybe a blown fuse?

I occasionally get a tire defect thing as well

Which doesnt make sense to me, I thought with non-OEM tires the TPMS wouldnt work anyways? Should I do something to calibrate it?

To check if its plugged in, set your nav out - press the eject as if you were putting a cassette tape in. Pull the frame around the nav directly backwards. It is just clipped in. Then the TMPS trim piece will come right out. Just held in by friction and two little bars. You dont even need to remove the nav trim to remove the TPMS trim but its just a lot easier.

Some technical info for you.

Check Control Display
The check control display is used to show the operating status of the RDW system. The
displays are as follows:

• “TIRE PRESSURE FAILURE” - (with an acoustic warning) this display will remain active
until the ignition is switched OFF.

• “TIRE PRESSURE SET” - Will be displayed when the system is put into
the initialization mode.

• “TIRE MONITORING INACTIVE” - Will be displayed when the system is manually
switched OFF or there is a system fault.

The RDW system must be initialized to allow the control module to adopt the wheel speed
signals and set the rolling circumferences in its memory. Initialization must be carried out
when:
• Tire inflation pressures are changed.
• New tires are installed.
• The control module or wheel speed sensors are changed.
The initialization process is started by pressing the push button >4 seconds (Tire Pressure
Set will be displayed in the matrix). The system is now in the learn mode and after driving
off, the control module will start to store the values for the rolling circumferences of the tires
based on the road speed.
For leakage detection, three different speed ranges are taken into account and must be
recognized by the control module to complete a full initialization process. The control module
must receive useable speed signals for a cumulative total of 4 to 15 minutes depending
on the speed range.
Once a speed range is set, the control module will then monitor that speed range for and
pressure losses. The system can only display a pressure loss warning, it can not display the
exact tire with the pressure loss. All tires need to be checked when the warning is displayed
in the matrix.
NOTE: Not all speed ranges need be set for the system to function properly.

Under certain driving conditions the control module will not evaluate the wheel speed sensors
as false warnings could be triggered. These conditions include:
• Initialization in a speed range that has not been complete
• During rapid acceleration
• Severe (heavy) braking
• High speed cornering
• Road speeds < 7MPH
• High slip differentials between individual wheels

Cheers,

Scott

Happy days!

Sometimes you need a forum to help point out the completely obvious..

I removed the trim panel and lo and behold, the connector was not attached to the switch. After a bit of digging around the innards of the dash to find the offending wire, it was re-attached and presto! I have a functioning TPMS.

Thanks everyone for the advice and moral support.

Put your build month and year in your signature I see you have questions. It will help with answers. I did start to answer your question but then I thought for a sec. and googled Milton Keynes and realized our cars are different. NA cars use a different system to Euro cars for determining tire defect, from my reading. Qualify that as you read thru tire defect posts. Pretty much everything else important is the same.

These tire systems can work even if you don't get the pressure set message, mine does and I don't ever get that message and I have tried everything anyone has said. Keys on, keys off, sneak up on the car, I even tried it while standing on my head, but I think the guys were just screwing with me at that point. ;) But if I drop enough pressure that the shape of the tire changes I get a warning that says tire defect. Even though everything I have read says it should say tire pressure failure on NA cars.

Sailor still getting used to this board and am beginning to get a feel for it.

Also today went out and checked the tyre pressures and they were well under at 2.0 Bar all round, so adjusted to pressures to the correct ones 2.4 bar front & 2.6 bar on the rear then reset the tyre pressure thing took the car for a spin and all is good I am now in a happy place and still learning about all the stuff on the car

Mine will say "Tyre Defect" in the cluster when the pressure gets low enough and it is a NA car.
