I am a new owner of an E39 M5, and I have had it inspected by a local BMW specialist.

They have informed me that the N/S front tyre is splitting on the inside wall, and that is definitely should not have passed the recent MOT inspection.

This is disappointing as the current tyres looked good, Contisportcontact 3 tyres. I will now replace the front two tyres.

I am happy to run different types front to back for a while, then eventually when the rears need replacing, complete the set.

I have tried using the 'search' facility but I couldn't find any recent posts.

What tyres seem to be favourite for you guys? I will mainly use the car for a weekend treat, no track driving planned.

I see that in the EVO tyre test the Pirelli P Zero came out on top..

Thanks in advance
Tony

michelins 4s are the best imo and they fill out the rims the most out of any brand tire, their a/s3 not so much if you push it hard. conti are ok, pirelli are junk imo-across the line compared to michelins

Pirelli's are hot garbage. Michelin PS4s are where it's at. I have 10 track days and ~14K miles on mine and they're still going storng...

I run contis and I like them. Good balance of grip and comfort.

Never been a fan of Pirellis. Found them a bit soft and they seem to wear out quicker.

I swore by Dunlop SP Sports on my other E39s as well and would consider trying those once it's time for a change.

Thank you for your your replies. Very helpful.

I'll avoid Pirelli then ;)

I will price up some Pilot Sport 4s.

TireRack would be a good source of info for you, have ratings and comparison videos for every class of tire.

Michelin Pilot super sports, once they heat up you feel even more of the road than when they were cold. I’ve been dangerously running my summer set through the winter on the East coast. Once it’s below 32 my beat is parked. Anything 32 and above, my tires do just fine
