Hello

I was looking for a long time for a good and sheap replace gearbox for the high power s14/m30/m88/s38 engines.
the normal getrag ones are strong, but when starting with heavy turbo's,and high nm outputs the stress on the boxes is to high after a time.
the older type getrag are more and more difficult to find.and prices go up.
its cheaper to find a other zf,then rebuild youre getrag.

so after long looking 2 type boxes are very strong.knowed for very high power output and are sheap to find.
the boxes must be used with a single mass flywheel and a sachs 765.the rest keeps Original bmw

the diesel box gs5-39dz with 1 gear 5.24 and 2 gear 2.91 not bad to a little long gearing.

the petrol box s5d320z with 1 gear 4.20/4.21 2 gear 2.49 a little better gearing.

I know from my new gearbox specialist that the internals are allmost the same, only other ratios.

the problem is,it will not fit together to a s14/m30/m88/s38

I found a man that have build a special jig, that the 2 bellhousing are cut with cnc, exactly are centered on the crankshaft.
and then welded together with zero play.100% center balanced welded.
the center jig keeps the center exact(0.01 tolerance).and the 2 bellhousing are bought so machined that they laying on each other with a hear fraction between.perfect for welding.

my box is under construction.I post all the pics here.and test it on my turbo M88/s38

on the same moment I am building a transaxle gearbox for the bmw m60,with a audi box.for a rear engine project.

that man have more jigs to build them on other engines to.

but I have promised him.first mine box,and test it.and then put his email info on this post.

Hello Eero

You are right,he is from finland I believe.there lives the specialist.
I will put his info and name here on this post.but he asked me.first doing my box,and the his info.(these are his exact words)

It's ok to put my e-mail address in the forums but please wait until we have done your gearbox ready so that you can speak from experience. Ok?

I am looking for a specialist for a long time,on this way you can make a turbo proof gearbox for a very good price.I told him that many people are looking for something like that.and I said that I will post this on m5board and bimmers forums,so there is nobody in the future that have problems any more with building a heavy tuned s14,s38,m30,m88 and is on the search for a stronger box.

for me this is how the forum must be used, helping other with there build.
I do not do this to make some money.I only like to tell there is a other way.

best regards

turbo gearbox s38 and m106

Hello

A quick update

a friend of me Tim Maatman(you can find him on facebook he makes a lot of turbo cars)
he helped met out with his solution to make a bullet proof
turbo gearbox, with rebuilding a 6 speed diesel and petrol gearbox.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_S6-53_transmission

I will use the petrol version for the s38 and the diesel version for the m106.

but no I found this online.
I think this will help a lot of people there for I post it here.

Ruben,

This is awesome information. I did not know anyone produce this adapter.

Do you understand the "special separate clutchshaft"? Is it longer than the original to account for the spacer width?

Seems like the same input shaft (diameter and teeth) as original S38/M5...

gearbox adapter

Hello

I think that the gearbox must be taken open.
and that the outpout shaft must be changed for a longer one.

I have sended a email because I want more info.
the problem was that like the big heavy 6 speed boxes like the e39 m5 and the s6 53 diesel and petrol boxes.
you can not get parts because they are not ment to be taken open.
when you try this they break.I have never found a company that can taken a gearbox like that open and back closed again without get it damaged.

I think that this is the reason the use the zf s5 310:320 because it go's easy open.
I do not know the 6 speed e36 m3 is going as easy open because its the same like the e39m5 box.
only the output shaft is smaller.the e39 m5 and the e46 m3(v8) box have the same thicker output shaft.
the bellhousing shape is different to but the gear inside are all the same.

when I know more I will post this here.
but when you see the prices of the getrag 280.
and with this adpater you can go to the zf s5d 320(the later are stronger)
then you have a good and strong box,and its cheap to find.

Shaft change is no longer required. Instead, a custom billet flywheel is used.

On the other hand, my family friend, who sadly died in a high speed crash, had experimented with this combo, years back. Other than making an adapter plate, he also made custom clutch plate. It is said that he achieved this by combining the original plate used on a M30 flywheel, with a clutch plate from a ZF "compatible" flywheel. Mind you, I haven't seen this concoction, but I was told that it worked quite well. The "ZF" centre piece would somehow, magically be swapped into an M30 original plate, making it suitable for both sides. If I hadn't found an original G280 recently, I would have tried this myself. Perhaps if I decide I want the 6th gear, in the future... 😁
