Just noticed an interesting thing about my M5 today.

Was looking over the engine (mostly admiring) and noticed that the left side (facing rear of the car) of the engine is about 2x louder than the right.

Listened a bit closer and it's what sounds like cam noise. They both sound the same but one is a lot louder.

Has anyone else noticed this? is it normal? Is my chain on its last legs?

Thanks

It's not your chain. It will outlast the engine.

It's a noisy vanos. Nothing to worry about. It's a slight diesel sound, in BMW terms it's what tells people you got an V10 under the hood! LOL

good news! Was afraid the chain tensioner/guide were going out. I just replaced my friend's chain/guide/tensioner on his 2001 540 and that was a BEAST job haha. Did it on my e24 and e23 and was like yeah it's an easy job, hahaha.

Needless to say wasn't looking forward to a chain swap.

Thanks for easing my mind :)

As for the noisy vanos, is this the same issue the e46s have? where you have to replace a metal bushing inside the vanos units because they wear out and rattle?
