I've searched a bit and it seems there are partial parts lists all over, even in the install and how to threads. Has anyone ever purchased the complete set of guides and associated parts to do this job, or is it always a 'Well, I'll buy a few pieces, then when I'm part ways in, I'll buy some more' sort of a job?

Any help is appreciated. I'm debating on doing this to my 130K engine. Not sure it's needed, but probably safe insurance.

I'm interested as well. My local shop quoted the job out at $819 in parts and $4800 in labor.

Ouch. That's a lot of Labor. I'd probably do this myself. I just don't want to drive 1.5 hours to the car and be missing a part and have to leave the engine torn apart.....more than it already is, haha.

There really isn't much reason to replace the timing chain guides proactively. I did, but that is because I was doing the Valve Cover & Upper Timing Chain Cover Gaskets anyway. The most reasonable approach is to check the condition periodically (check for pieces) and if they're not broken then there is no point. Once you see they start breaking, then you should replace them ASAP. There will be plenty of warning signs once they start cracking and your engine won't be in any sudden danger such as it would if you had a cooling system failure for example.

There might be pieces of plastic/aluminum in the oil sump and oil filter. Rattling sound usually indicates that the chains are already shaving aluminum of the chain guides (plastic rail surface already gone) or inner surfaces of the lower/upper timing covers.

Are all the VANOS O-rings still from the factory without any refurb done? Then at that mileage it might be beficial to perform full VANOS refurb by replacing all the O-rings and diaphragm springs because you will have to take VANOS units off anyway. The length of the part list somewhat depends on that. S62-gurus in this forum usually recommend to replace the duplex main chain and cam chains "while you are in there" to play safe with relatively low additional cost.

My indy will do mine very soon. I followed the list published by VantaaM5 with few additions from VANOS-related forum threads:

Very extensive.....but very cool.

I've done VANOS refurb as one side was leaking. I'm not sure if I pinched something as they appear to be weeping a bit again, although it could be a Valve cover. I might just go nuts and do it all again.

If I blow something apart with my forced induction plans, I'd rather it not be maintenance related.

BMW has said that in Germany spare part warehouses will receive new stock on 8th of September. Here in Europe that damn rail has been out of stock since early June. Just frusfrating because the whole job has to wait that one critical piece :mad:

Having just done all of it, that's a solid list. I'd suggest a couple changes:
-If your coolant system if new, nix it
-if your idlers/tensioners/pulleys are over 100,000, add them to the list
-Beisan VANOS products if you're already in there and over 100,000 miles

Wow....yeah, looks like I'll be ordering these parts this week. Mine is at 130K-ish miles right now.

Would like to bump this. I was able to order everything but the Lower Tensioner 11311407337

Seems like it is still back ordered....they are saying December now. Anyone know of a secret stash somewhere?

I searched high and low and found nothing. BMW UK told me they searched the UK and Europe and also found nothing although eaM5 on here found 2 in Helsinki and kindly bought one for me and sent it over without me asking about it as he knew i'd been searching without success so a massive shout to him for his generosity.

Unfortunately it doesn't really help you out but i'd say ask the dealers to check the US and if they can perhaps Asia for dealer stock, otherwise you'll be waiting until at least December

Is this part M5 specific or can we cross shop with the 540? I might need it this winter too.
