When my steering column does its memory adjustment (and retract) when getting in (and out) of the car, I've noticed the motor getting more noisy and the motion getting more jerky. So I'm wondering if this will eventually fail and need replacement? Anybody else notice this on their M5? I tried to do a search on this and found references to the X5 having this trouble.

My steering motor is getting more and more noisy as well, but the movement seems to be fine. It is definately not the best sound when you move the steering wheel though.

this happend to my 528, the motor was replaced for the tilt mechanism. It was making a grinding noise, but was still functioing. Replaced under warranty, in that car's case. Hasn't happened to the M5 yet...

The tilt steering is definately an issue with the M5. Mine has not been loud, but a few times has not tilt down when I start the car. For the past few weeks it has been fine, who knows...

Small price to pay for driving an M5!!
