The E60 should be aluminium bodied

The Audi A8 has had an aluminium body for years (with the exception of "police" versions - yes they exist - which had a steel roof to allow magnetic blue lights to stay put).

The new Jaguar XJ is built largely of aluminium, which saves weight so adding to performance and economy.

For mass market vehicles, this is invariably too costly but for high end 'flagship' cars like these it makes sense.

If BMW don't make the E60 M5 in aluminium, they will have lost a good oppotunity to pull even further ahead (IMHO). Certain components in the E39 (eg. suspension) are already aluminium but this won't be enough in future.

Just imagine that V10 500+bhp engine mounted to a lightweight car mmmmmm

Current aluminum spaceframe technology is very expensive. Aluminum-bodied E60 M5 would definitely cost over the $90K mark. I think the hood and roof sections, as well as the suspension subframes, are aluminum, though.

$90K I wish.grrrrrrr grrrrrrr

Its going to cost Btn $250 and $ 300 AUD for the new M5 Here.

:crying: :crying: :crying:

Which is about $125 to $150 USD.

Thats why the USA is the lucky country.

And you are complaining about $90 K USD hmmm hmmm hmmm

I wish I could complain about buying beasts so cheaply.

At $90K USD I'd buy Two of them.

I think you make a good case, but the problem I see with it is the M cars have been for a long time been hopped up series cars. so going back and redoing the basic frame of the car out of a special material like aluminum. I think BMW has found ways of using some aluminum as has been mentioned, but the frame will be steel. they will be using the knowledge from the Z8 in various places. some of the payoff is evident in the suspension pieces in the new 7 and z4.

Actually, the main reason why the M3 had the aluminium bonnet was PROBABLY to even out the weight balance...

Main problem with Aluminium Space Frame, aluminium is harder to work with, hence is more costly. Thus, implementing ASF into a small volume car would just cause prices to rocket. If ASF is going to be implemented into a car, it should be probably on the 745i/Li.

I think an additional problem to having aluminium body parts, etc will be fixing the car after an accident.. My understanding is that it costs a lot more to straighten a bent aluminium frame than a regular steel frame.... plus the aluminium parts itself will be more expensive to buy, so it's possible that insurance premiums will also go up because of that
