Steering angle sensor DIY fix - it worked

A few weeks ago, my car exhibited classic steering angle sensor (SZL) failure symptoms - at the first instance of turning the steering wheel after starting the car, I'd get errors indicating falts with the DSC and the FTM. I'd read about this fix My $0.02 Steering Angle Sensor Fix - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum - E90Post.com a while back, and decided to try some aspects of it before giving my car up to a mechanic for a day or so.

Specifically, I pulled the steering angle sensor, opened it up, and cleaned the top side of the optical disk with glasses cleaning solution and a lint-free, super fine weave, microfiber glasses cleaning cloth. One of the posts recommended isopropyl alcohol, which I did not use because alcohol can craze some types of plastic and the optical disk is plastic. The glasses cleaning solution said it was safe for plastic lenses.

There was, in fact, a nasty brown film on the disk. I thought about cleaning the bottom side of the disk (the side with the pattern deposited on it), but I was worried about damaging the pattern, so I didn't. I also unscrewed the clear block that transmits light from the LED (it needs a tiny, maybe T-8 Torx driver). It was a bit yellowed (not crystal clear looking), and the cleaning didn't seem to change that.

I did not try to reflow any of the solder connections.

I put it all back together and drove it around on and off Sunday and to work this morning. I've not got the error again. I'm not saying that it was the cleaning that fixed it. It could have been that I'd had a loose connector. However, whatever I did seemed to have fixed it.

Some things to know:
  • The DIY linked above is for an e90. Our e60s are a bit different. The steering angle sensor looks the same and is in the same place, but getting to it is a little different. If you're mechanically inclined, it is not hard.
  • You don't have to re-code the steering angle sensor to the car if you do this, because you're changing anything.
  • Some early e60s had the clear block over the LED changed.

Therefore, you can order a new one. If my issues come back, I might do that.

I cleaned mine about over a year ago, and had no more issues until yesterday when the dreaded warning came up again. Tried clearing codes to no avail. This morning I went out, and the warning came up again. With the engine running, I turned the steering lock to lock, and the warning cleared. My car has been sitting out in hot Alabama sun, so the disc may have started to fog up again. No idea if clearing the warning will last, but it's worth a try if your warning comes up.

This problem recurred. If the car was cold, the problem went away, but if the interior got warm from sitting in the sun, the problem came back. It would clear sometimes by turning the wheel lock to lock, but it would come back. Finally got fed up, and pulled a angle sensor from
a car at a local pick and pull. Checked the disc in it, and it was pristine. Pulled the sensor in my car, and while some good had started to reform, I found a crack in the optical disc. I pulled the disc from the one I'd bought, and put it in mine. Buttoned everything back up, cleared all codes, and it works great. If you look at the bottom of the disc in the picture, you can make out the crack. Apparently, it would close up when cold, and widen when hot and cause the codes.

I ended up reading all the posts to date on this thread.

Instruction here are great but I wish there were better pictures.

Then I came across this excellent article that shows you step by step how to change SZL.

Anyone who has this problem needs to read and watch videos here:

Thank me later.

after you clean the plastic disk are you good to go??? or...do you have to re-calibrate the steering angle senor using special BMW tools/scanners etc.?

Just wondering if I can do this at home and just clean the sensor and put it all back together and not have to do any other steps

Plastic lens going free

I have just cleaned my steering angle sensor and had the little plastic lens ready to replace but it turned out when i opened it up my 2005 has the early analog type that does not use the optical disc and does not have the plastic lens so if anyone in the uk is going to do the diy clean and would like me to put it in the post to them just PM me your address, I think after 2006 has the newer type.
