So, I was driving my 79k mile - 2008 M5 on the freeway today in 5th gear, EDC Sport on, radio on, when all of a sudden the car felt like it shut off power and then flashed some warning lights. The yellow BRAKE light on the cluster was on, the dsc light flashed and then turned off, and then the iDrive system said "Start-Off Assistance inactive". No other warning lights were on, and power and gear changes (SMG) were normal. I downshift through the gears to 1st, and parked the car. Once I turned it off, the yellow damper symbol flashed on the cluster with the exclamation mark next to it. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My M5 is on H&R lowering springs, but I don't think this should affect anything. I was able to turn off/on traction control completely with no issues as well.
I have the same thing happening. Also 2008 M5. I've been putting it off. The error will go away if the car sits for a few days and then will come back after driving it for a bit. It drives fine other than losing the S6 shift (it drops down 1 to S5) and losing hill assist/start off assistance.
Let us know what you find....most likely an DSC pump or ABS unit issue.
Sounds like a possible voltage regulator issue. You're about at the mileage where they wear out and start creating a ****-ton of different dash lights. Mine did something similar (~100k) and had to have it towed to a shop, got the regulator swapped out and it was as good as new. I think it flashed an ABS error, DSC error and a yellow cog.

He'd be getting way more errors and carnival lights/i-drive going out, radio shutting off etc if it was voltage regulator. You'll have to clarify what "shut off power" means. I had the voltage reg/alt issue prior and changed my alternator (new battery too) to fix that issue. That has been resolved. Now I have this DSC issue. I think the DSC error is BECAUSE of the voltage reg/alt going bad and fried the pump with overvoltage.
1 of my codes is faulty DSC connector IIRC...I bet you have the same.
I think you're onto something there. Because all of the lights reset after turning off the car. They come on very randomly. Even when they showed up on the dash, they would flash for a few seconds and then go away. On the iDrive many different check control messages showed up, like "Increased battery discharge, DBC malfunction, DSC malfunction, and even "Servotronic malfunction". But like I said once I turn off the car and turn it back on the error messages/problems go away until I start driving for about 15 minutes or more. It's very odd. I also want to add I am in NY and it's getting pretty cold. Maybe the cold climate is affecting the electronics?
