I am getting SMG and once was a holdout for the manual. Had the opportunity to jump in and get one now so took it.

I was born and bred on a manual and love the way I can control the speed of the car through the gears without relying on brakes. Does the SMG give the same sensation, or is it capable of giving the sensation of controlling speed, slow/fast/whatever? Downshifting into corners/exiting the freeway/coming up to a stoplight, etc... Can it behave like a manual in these scenarios?

Yes it is just like driving a manual for engine braking. It takes a bit of time to get used to using it at low speeds you can't modulate the cluth release, ie changing down to second to slow right down to stop.
