my SES light has been coming on and going off quite frequently.

Bring in to stealer (hey I still got a warranty)

1.5hrs of work later and they still can't tell me what is wrong with the car, not even a hint. What was the fault code? don't know says the SA, tech is still" pinpointing" the problem

Frustrating they are really inspiring confidence in me. I can just hear it now, your brake duct mod is forcing to much air into the flux capacitor and since that is not a factory approved mod it is going to cost you one butt raping.

Oh don't even get me started about the clutch. Time for a new stealer I think.

I thought they should be able to print out the actual fault codes. If no performance loss, check gas cap (loose=SES), and then suspect CPS (may or may not notice power loss). Or, try another dealer!!!! ;)

Gotta hate those butt rapings, the worst... ;) ;) ;)

Seriously thoug, i think for the ses light to be on, there has to be a fault code, present for at least a couple of 'drive cycles'. Maybe your dealer is incompetent...

From my experiance most dealers, sorry stealers suck. What you need to do is try and find a specialist or even a different dealer with someone who actually has still got a passion for cars and doesnt just treat it as a job.

My school is great at taking advantage of students, so our saying is "check six." I suggest you do the same DrewT, and then head your butt to another dealership. Sounds like the one you are at has no buisness touching your M5. Let us know how it works out all in all. You can try searching the board for good dealerships in your area, or start a poll.

My bet is on a CAM position sensor which is bad.

scary it was the cam sensor, Darn is this that common, car has 24k miles on it 2001
Both my intake CPS's were done in the last 12 months and I am getting the intermittant CEL, so I am betting on one of the exhaust CPS's next. I have an appointment next week.

Could be a lambda sensor. Mention this to the service advisor when you drop the car in next.

Get a Peake tool and read the codes yourself before bringing it in. The easy things to check if that is inconclusive are the gas cap and the exhaust (leaks) if you have an aftermarket one that was only clamped, not welded on. You can also get a SES light by gunning the engine too much as you can get too much raw gas out the pipes which will set off the light.
