What would you rather have ??

Maybe the SL55AMG has more power and can kick the 996 TT in acceleration, but I'd still have the 996TT, because of the 4WD, more sportscar. From all the stories I've read on this board and in mags I think the SL is a great car, but not really for very spirited driving, take care,

996 tt,
round a track or down the twisties the turbo will leave the sl55 standing..on the autobahn its a close race...

all the best

Also i think that the wow factor of the current sl will dimish really quickly because of the new introduction of the sl350...there will be a lot around..

all the best

I think you need to narrow this a little by letting us know if we can order the TT as automatic only or as our choice. if its our choice, then I choose the TT. But if its a battle of automatics, then I would go with the SL55 because the purpose of the car changes- at least for me it does.

The SL55 will not stay with the TT in acceleration. Where do you get your info.? It is way slower to 60, 100, 124 and above.
Porsche TT wins easily.
Nice attitude for somebody who's wrong....

The latest issue of the German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport (AMS) has a comparison between 5 +300 km/h cars. They are all non modified production cars:

Aston Martin Vanquish
Ferrari 550 Maranello
Lamborghini Murciélago
Mercedes SL55 AMG (limiter removed)
Porsche GT2

They test the cars at the Italian high speed track Nardo (where you don't have any centrifugal force on the car when doing 240km/h).
They test acceleration 0-100km/h, 0-200km/h, 0-300km/h and topspeed.

The results are surprising:

0-100 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 5.6 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 4.7 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 3.6 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 4.6 s
Porsche GT2 4.0 s

0-200 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 17.4 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 14.6 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 11.4 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 13.7 s
Porsche GT2 13.1 s

0-300 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 55.0 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 61.2 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 34.2 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 32.5 s
Porsche GT2 40.9 s

Top speed:
Aston Martin Vanquish 316 km/h
Ferrari 550 Maranello 306 km/h
Lamborghini Murciélago 330 km/h
Mercedes SL55 AMG 325 km/h
Porsche GT2 315 km/h

And here we're talking about the GT2, not the "regular" Turbo....and between these 2 cars is a remarkable difference...

Yup, the SL55 is way slower than the Turbo...

Why do people always measure the worth of vehicles by how fast it goes in a straight line? Hell, take the SL55 AMG to the ring and I'll be that even our M5s and M3s can kick it's ***. It's a boat w/ a lot of power. The design for the SL55AMG is a "Cruiser", not a "Sports" car.

My Choice: TT
If I have the money to buy a second car, I choose a 2nd TT or trade in the first TT and get a GT2.

My 2 cents.

Kevin unfortunately for you the SL55 would beat you around the ring. I believe it does it in 8:15. The same track driver pulled something like 8.33 for the M5 and something similar for the M3 as well as 8.22 for the Z8. These are numbers at the top of my head but it sounds about right.

The SL55 is the perfect blend of supercar/hardtop convertible/daily driver. I do not see any other car in the world competing with it. Clarkson has the same view thats why he bought one. His last car was a 355 and he states the SL55 is the best car he EVERY owned.

As nice as the 996TT is it is no SL55. People can romantacize about having manual transmissions but the SL55 is THE best car period.

Two very diferent animals but without question the 996TT. The Porshe leaves so much more of an impression visually even before you get behind the wheel.

Ohhhh I just HAVE to make a comment about this :hihihi:

Porsche designs are very retro. 99.999% of the population out there would not even have a clue as to what generation porsche you where driving whether it was a C4 or a GT2. "ohhh its a porsche YAWN" thats pretty much the reaction of everyone I know. I guess its mainly because too many people are running around with older cheaper porsches and nobody can distinguish between them. I still can tell the difference between a Carrera and a Turbo unless I get a side view of the side intakes.

Check for the correct times the links in my signature. You can argue about the SL55 being the best car in the world, but given the choice I would go for a real sportscar like the GT3. The SL55 is a near perfect all-round car, but from what I hear it lacks in the sensation department. And if there is one emotion I would like to get from a sportscar it's sensation....

Finality - I was exaggerating a bit. Notice that I didn't compare the times on the ring between the TT and the SL55? I am just trying to point out that ...

SL55 - Cost twice as much as my M3, but only 18 seconds faster at the ring. I am pretty sure that w/ a few mods (e.g. Johan's M3), this gap would reduce even further. Just trying to argue that on a value of return basis, the M5s and M3s win.

If I want to cruise on the highway, I'd pick the SL55AMG.

If I want to zip around downtown or on a track, 996 TT or GT2.

My 2 cents.

If you want value on return basis, you shouldn't buy a M3 or M5 either. I can name numerous cars that are WAY faster for less money.

That you have your preferences, that's all fine. Your arguments are pointless though...

Of course! A civic w/ ITR engine transpant, a blower, and some suspension will out perform M3. If we are to compare this civic to the M3, then heck yeah the civic is a better value/performance vehicle.

However ... I am comparing the value of a stock SL55 ($120K) to a stock M3 ($60K). It's all relative isn't it? I don't see how you can say that my argument is pointless?

Then again, I thought that we are here to compare the TT to the SL55? Isn't this entire comparision between the SL55 to BMWs pointless also? I only bought up this comparision with an exaggerating state of mind, and I've already admitted that the M3 and M5 is no comparison to the SL55 in terms of performance. What else do you want?

Well, you exaggarate, without making a point. A Ferrari 360 Modena is way more expensive than the SL55, but isn't much faster. Does that make it a worse car ???

If we're talking stock vs. stock, I'm pretty sure a Corvette Z06 will kill an M3. Does that make it a better car ??

Didn't think so either...

Um ... now we are including Ferrari ... great.

I am tired and don't have time for this apple vs. oranges comparisons. No more comparisions. You win, you know more, be happy. I am going for a drive w/ Emma.

late.

will the SL put a smile on your face every time you touch it? I dont know. I did see Mario drive the SL and then the Z8 and he had more fun driving the Z8. I think all that weight the SL carries helps remove some of the fun factor. this choice comes down to: you want the manual tranny and more sports car character or do you want the do it all well vehicle. times around the ring are a good measure of comparison, but at the end of the day, how excited will you be when driving it to the store to get some milk, aww, who are we kidding, some cookies!
