Can someone tell me what's the best engine oil and viscosity to use, gear and diff oil?
Things are looking good :)

Thanks
Alex
Oil? That's a dangerous question...... LET"S GET READY TO RUMMMMBLE!

My favorite is Mobil 1 15w50, Redline MT90 for the trans and Mobil 1 90w140 with a friction additive for the diff ( may switch to redline)

I used to put 5 litres of dextron 2 every week in my E34 pick up.

So basically you can use what ever sounds good. Nice!

I am looking after it, don't worry :)
Dextron II? I haven't seen that stuff in years...I think they are going on 4 or 5 now.

The Getrag 280 will let you know almost instantly if it likes MT90 or Dex...ZZZT...Crunch... ZzzzT

Redline D4 is a good choice for Dex

Bob , are we going to have a crash , bang , wallop discussion on Gearbox oil .............. All of my 5 speed Getrag 280s run great on Dexron II , although I am open to suggestions of superior variants !

One big happy E34 M5 loving family !

We could have a MMA cage match.... just add coolant, brake fluid, parts and leather care to the discussion...Lol

I spent the last month or so trying every "recommended" fluid known to mankind trying to get my 2nd gear to behave before pulling the trans and shipping it out for work. Baby Harp Seal tears, Unicorn blood and several brands of personal lubricants....

I used the redline products because the original work on the trans was warrantied and required redline MT90, and I tried Dextron in the redline D4 flavor (The Louie XIII of Dex at $16 a QT) on the suggestion of Performance Gearing, the shop that rebuilt the trans a few years back. It made the inside of the trans spotless, shifts were smoooth and crisp, but it didn't solve my 2nd gear problem.
