Hi all,

got the M5 mot'd today, had a good look underneath while it was on the ramp. It doesn't look too bad.

The only advisory it got was for the rear shocks leaking oil, it's still got SLS as far as i can see so i'm going to have to do something about that in future...

Now i know it's in pretty good shape i'm going to give it a good service.

Can someone tell me what's the best engine oil and viscosity to use, gear and diff oil? I'm going to inspect the valve clearances myself but if any adjustments need to be made i'd rather pay someone else to do them.

Things are looking good :)

Thanks
Alex

Oil? That's a dangerous question...... LET"S GET READY TO RUMMMMBLE!

My favorite is Mobil 1 15w50, Redline MT90 for the trans and Mobil 1 90w140 with a friction additive for the diff ( may switch to redline)
Thanks, yes everyone seems to use different oil. The transmition has got a slight whine so I'm hoping a gear oil change with the correct amount might cure it.
Dexron II for the gearbox , appx 2 litres available from BMW .

SAF/XJ Diff oil , appx 2 litres from BMW .

Engine oil .......... bish , bosh , baff , kapow , whooomph , thunk etc etc etc Castrol Edge 10w60 ( previously TWS ) is a nice oil !

Look after this one Alex dear boy !

D
I used to put 5 litres of dextron 2 every week in my E34 pick up.

So basically you can use what ever sounds good. Nice!

I am looking after it, don't worry :)

Dextron II? I haven't seen that stuff in years...I think they are going on 4 or 5 now.

The Getrag 280 will let you know almost instantly if it likes MT90 or Dex...ZZZT...Crunch... ZzzzT

Redline D4 is a good choice for Dex
Can I put castrol tts 2 stroke oil in it, it will smell nice then :p
Silkolene 2 stroke oil always smelt the nicest in my 350 LC ................

Bob , are we going to have a crash , bang , wallop discussion on Gearbox oil .............. All of my 5 speed Getrag 280s run great on Dexron II , although I am open to suggestions of superior variants !

One big happy E34 M5 loving family !

I've got some pro 2 at home I used to put it in my trials bike.

I'm a big fan of 350 LC's there worth a few quid now with matching 4LO numbers but that's another discussion....

We could have a MMA cage match.... just add coolant, brake fluid, parts and leather care to the discussion...Lol

I spent the last month or so trying every "recommended" fluid known to mankind trying to get my 2nd gear to behave before pulling the trans and shipping it out for work. Baby Harp Seal tears, Unicorn blood and several brands of personal lubricants....

I used the redline products because the original work on the trans was warrantied and required redline MT90, and I tried Dextron in the redline D4 flavor (The Louie XIII of Dex at $16 a QT) on the suggestion of Performance Gearing, the shop that rebuilt the trans a few years back. It made the inside of the trans spotless, shifts were smoooth and crisp, but it didn't solve my 2nd gear problem.

That will do it :biggrinbounce:

Having worked for Castrol R & D 15 years ago, I could recommend ......... pick your own favorite. High Zink content diesel oil anybody ?

P.S. Alex, your mention of the pick-up made me realize that I know of you through Luke & more recently Shaun.
Martin, talk to me... I'm guessing you work for Mclaren?

It's a small world our dad made that pick up the looks it got were priceless... Shame about the M20 auto
Do you know a cheese man :)
