I'm new to BMWs all together and have decided on an M6, 2007ish. Where's the best place to buy one and what are the plus & minuses? Thanks for your input!

Most would suggest going to BMW so that you can get a CPO'd. This will give you two additional years of warranty as certain items of concern can be expensive to fix (SMG, Engine, Vanos).

The M6 is a great choice for a car if you are prepared for the expenses. The actual purchase of the vehicle is only the beginning. Fuel cost for a vehicle that is only rated at 12 city and 18 highway are rather high. Actual mileage, in my case, is 10.2 mpg. Further, standard maintenance and fluids as well as any unexpected repairs can be pretty serious concerns. A quart of oil, from my source, is $13.95. This is fairly typical example of the costs of materiel for this vehicle. Let's not even discuss mods! Preparation is paramount! Do your research and negotiate very hard regarding the price. As the previous poster stated, I highly recommend a CPO purchase through BMW. Additionally, BMW is offering $500 per months for the first 3 months as well as a day of M driving school. This is roughly $2,600.00 to $2,800.00 in value.

I cannot overstate the importance of performing your due diligence with respect to the potential purchase.

That said, the car will put a smile on your face that you will have to pry off with a crow bar. I'm traveling on business but when I return home, the first thing I will do is drive my beast! Most other members of this board would have a difficult time driving a lesser car.

Good luck and take time to read this board...it is an amazing resource!

Regards-mk

Thanks for all of the feedback. I love the M6 look but how comparable are the 6 series, non M cars regarding dependability, MPG etc..?

If you want respectable gas mileage (in the 9-10 MPG range) then the M6 is a must for you. The 6-series will never even hope to match that range.

Mileage really depends on lots of factors. Driving really hard eats more gas obviously. But getting caught in stop and go traffic is what kills the mileage for me. My normal commute is off-peak hours (in at 0930, out at 1800) and it has a lot of freeway miles with moderate traffic so I cruise from 50 to 80 mostly. I do stick my foot in it at selected places along my usual route and the car sees 100 mph multiple times a week (but briefly) and I take certain corners hard enough that the tires are making noise but M Dynamic mode (DSC) is not kicking in. In other corners, DSC certainly kicks in. The point being, I don't always drive like the old fart that I am. But on the other hand, a lot of my miles are loafing/cruising along.

My overall mileage is 13.5 mpg.

For me, it drops more from getting stuck in stop and go traffic for me than from having a heavier foot some days.

Your mileage will depend on how you use the car and the traffic you find yourself in. Below 10 is unusual but not unheard of. Over 17 is also unusual but not unheard of (especially on highway trips).

As they say: YMMV

Bought mine in December from a dealer and it is a CPO car.
No issues<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
I did stop one time and pick up a Starbucks and gave it to the Police officer directing traffic into the local High School one Rainy morning. <o:p></o:p>
He saw the car. He nodded-I nodded. <o:p></o:p>
There you go. You may have to invest in the local Police Ball-but they are good guys and girls. <o:p></o:p>
The biggest issue is this car wants to run. <o:p></o:p>
Gas is cheap compared to JW Blue and Opus on a per liter basis. <o:p></o:p>

Good luck in searching. <o:p></o:p>

Are you saying something like a 650 gets worse mileage than an M6?
Ajax does not understand your question. The M6 should get 9-10MPG if you are driving it correctly. The lower the figure, the higher your grade, so to speak. A 650 gets higher mileage, which is a lower grade on the score card, just like golf strokes. Please understand that in the M6 world, high MPG numbers are not looked upon in the same way as they are in the mundane world of ordinary automobiles. If you are fortunate enough to acquire one, you will soon understand. Best of luck to you!

I couldn't figure out why you were appologizing, but after watching a few times I noticed the topeless dudes in the background. I would prefer my M6 topless in the background.

There are men in the background? I never noticed that and I've watching many many times.
