Hi Guys,
I may be coming back to the M5 community, this time in an e60. Ive found what may be a nice example of a 2008 but am hesitant because of an engine swap that was done about 4 years ago. I would probably not consider the car if the engine was an early production 2005 or 2006 due to the Rod bearing issues. I had a 2000 e39 M5 with similar problems and i eventually wound up putting a newer engine in it (thanks Clemster!).
My question is this: Where is the production label on the s85 engine and can anyone tell me how to de-code it? Apologies if this information is located somewhere obvious on this forum but i've looked and have not been able to find it. Thanks!

IIRC the label is on top plastic valve cover driver side, but I wouldn't hold my breath it's still there. There is a also vin stamping on the the front driver side bottom of the block

There is no VIN on the block itself. The only serialized number is the engine serial number located behind the alternator on the front left side of the block. There is no public facing means of matching that serial to the VIN of the car it came from, you would need to know someone at BMW and I don't think dealerships have access to that database directly.

That said, it's a myth that later engines were different in any way regarding rod bearings.

Oops I completely missed this part. Like Jim said all S85 and S65 engines suffer from bearing issues, regardless of year.

Thanks, Not interested in matching it to a vin. I want to determine the build date of the engine itself

Dont take this the wrong way and apologies for initially not fully understanding what you were asking for... But stating the obvious here, did u ask the guy your trying to buy it from for receipts or the shop the swap was done at what was the donor car?


Before I bought my e60, a shop down in Florida replaced the SMG pump in 2014/2015, and I called them up and they were able to pull out the info... so what I am saying is find out who did it and see where it take you.

Um, Yes, I did ask for receipts but he has none with the actual build date of the replacement motor nor the year of the car it came from. Regardless, i would want to verify myself and confirm, rather than depend on something that could have easily been transcribed incorrectly.

There were 3 versions of the S85. They are documented in this forum, just google it. Again, year is irrelevant to bearings. Sump will be the key to know if it's a ver 1 or not.
